This lesson used the gradual release of responsibility to teach the strategies. The students were guided through the following packet throughout the lesson.

This packet was used as a form of formative assessment to assess how well the students understood the strategies. The students were asked to show which strategy they used yo solve each addition or subtraction problem with two double-digit numbers.
To conclude the lesson the students were asked to fill out the following exit ticket.

This exit ticket contained two questions. The first question asked the students which of the four strategies learned in the lesson they liked best. The second question asked "Why would an inventor need to know these strategies when creating a product to bring in the theme of inventors.
