Number Sense & Numeration - Patterning & Algebra

Every morning we start our day counting how many days we have been together. We explore how many digits are in that number and if it is a group of TEN or a ONE. We represent the number using the NUMICON Shape in correspondence to Place Value of each digit in the number. Then we practice writing the number and put it up on our number line. Then we count by ones or twos and sometimes tens. We are almost at 50 days together!!

We recently went on a nature walk to look for patterns in nature and in manmade objects. Have a look at the pictures below to see what the children found. The children loved this math class! We have further looked at and created patterns in music, numbers, colour, movement, sound and shapes. Since we have been back to school after 'Herst Vakancie' we have been exploring Number bonds and finding the different ways be can add two number shapes together to make a big number. For example, how many ways I can make the number ten using two smaller numbers. We have used connect cubes and Numicon Shapes to show their thinking and then write and draw what we did.

Finding Patterns in Nature

Documenting patterns they see

You can't see it in the picture but the children spotted a spider web with beads of water and they saw all these beautiful line patterns.
