Click the link below to listen to a short read aloud of the story “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds.
The story is about a little girl named Vashti who feels upset that she cannot draw anything. Her art teacher encourages her to be brave and “make her mark,” helping her to unlock her creativity!
I invite you and your families to listen to the story together and complete your very first art assignment by creating art from just a dot!
Lesson Objective – Students will celebrate their creativity and courage by creating their own artwork from a dot inspired by the story “The Dot.”
Decorate a paper plate with markers, crayons or paint.
Trace an item at home to make a circle or many circles and decorate/color them in.
Make “not a dot” by tracing a circle and coloring or painting the background only (leaving the circle/dot) white.
Stamp it. Use a circular object at home like a water bottle cap, Q-tip or the back of the eraser on a pencil, to dip into paint to create “dots” on a page.
