Click the link below to listen to a short read aloud of the story “The Dot” by Peter H. Reynolds.
The story is about a little girl named Vashti who feels upset that she cannot draw anything. Her art teacher encourages her to be brave and “make her mark,” helping her to unlock her creativity!
I invite you and your families to listen to the story together and complete your very first art assignment by creating art from just a dot!
Lesson Objective – Students will celebrate their creativity and courage by creating their own artwork from a dot inspired by the story “The Dot.”
Trace an object at home to make a circle or many circles. Draw inside them to decorate/fill it with interesting lines, a picture or a pattern. You can add color at the end !
Cut, arrange and paste different color and size circles to create a circle collage. You can trace different objects around your home to make perfect circles.
Try overlapping or adding other circular materials like pom poms, sequins, cotton balls etc.
Make “not a dot” by tracing a circle and coloring or painting the background only (leaving the circle/dot) white.
Draw it. Cut a small black dot (about the size of a bottle cap) Place it on a blank page and think about what you can turn that dot into. Fill the entire page! You can color at the end.
*Remember to have fun, always try your best and be creative :)
