Building a Sense of Mattering and Belonging
These activities are used as classroom warm-ups to help the classroom environment be more lively and inclusive. They are used as a model for facilitating effective lessons/activities and for fostering positive group development. These activities promote "we-ness", balance participation, and encourage elements of respect, acceptance, shared vision, and belonging.
This activity helps students become more familiar with each other by sharing common interests, memories, or experiences. And before you know it, students learn and remember each other's names and feel connected to one another.
In teams, students will build a tower with 20 pipe cleaners. They will only have 8 minutes to build the tower with their team. The finished towers will be measured to see which team has the highest tower.
Students will sit in teams to share their thoughts or ideas on a concept. Students will be asked to draw on their experiences, interests, or other classes to help them develop an answer to the question. Students will be encouraged to build on each other's ideas or either agree/disagree to thoughts, ideas, or opinions.
These elements are used as a guide to help students go beyond a surface-level understanding of a concept and to enhance their ability to think critically. These critical thinking tools help students think deeper about a concept and understand that concept with greater complexity.
Progressive muscle relaxation is an exercise that relaxes your mind and body by progressively tensing and relaxing muscle groups throughout your entire body. During the activity, students will tense each muscle group (5 sec) vigorously, but without straining, and then suddenly release the tension to feel the muscle relax. Students will need to be aware of their breathing throughout the exercise.
