I can still vividly recall when I was in second grade, I asked my mother not to throw away any of my educational materials because I wanted to teach my siblings and neighbors how to read and count. Since that day, I knew my purpose in life was to be an educator. After discovering my purpose, the forthcoming adversities I faced helped me remain persistent in pursuing a career in education. As a woman in the Latinx community and a first-generation student, I encountered numerous educational barriers and familial setbacks. I can still remember the moments when I felt like my dreams were unattainable because of the lack of academic, financial, and academic support. However, with the support of caring and devoted educators and coaches, I surpassed the challenges I needed to in order to become the educator I’ve always wanted to be. My teachers affirmed and encouraged me to pursue my purpose and passion. For those reasons and many more, I plan to be an advocate, role model, and inspiration to many students who need assistance in reaching their educational endeavors. I’ve realized that every event in my life has been a stepping stone to help me become the community figure I always aspired to be. So as a future educator, I plan to paint a picture of how students can thrive inside and outside of school to make the world around them a better place. I know that by teaching mathematics I will open windows for students to develop a mathematical identity that will help them feel like valuable contributors to society. I will make them feel like they matter and belong to the school, their peers, and the community. I also want students to enjoy the mathematical moments of learning, understanding, and applying mathematics to higher levels. I want to share with them the joy that comes from knowing, doing, and being mathematicians. My resume is below, or you can view it on Google Docs.
