In my teaching I plan to tap into my students natural creativity by integrating literature, storytelling and drama into my core lessons. For young minds, pretend play can bring ideas and concepts to life and allow all types of learners to engage with all types of materials. Movement and interaction also stimulate different parts of our brain and keep the whole child involved in their learning.
Because art activates different parts of our minds and engages students in a richer way. It is a key tool in differentiating instruction to appeal to all learners.
Allowing choice in student assignments encourages creativity and self-expression. It also increases engagement as students can select activities they find more enjoyable versus having to complete a teacher selected format. On such means of differentiated product choice is in the use of a choice board for projects.
Stories are accompanied by a coloring page based on the story, which the students can color as they listen. I then asked my fourth grade class to write a short summary of each story after listening to practice both retention and summarizing skills.
Folk tales from all over the world retold as 20 minute podcasts.
