Remote Learning Week 8

momentum & Impulse phenomena.pptx

6/8-6/12 Seniors Last Week

This week will continue with momentum. Since its seniors last week are going to try something fun. In-Class we would call this March Momentum Madness. It’s a fun activity on Momentum and Impulse. It’s a good old fashion water balloon or egg toss. A classic game played at family reunions, summer camps, and leadership seminars. The general idea is to get an egg or water balloon and a partner. You started out maybe 6 feet away from each other and you toss the object to each other. After each successful catch, you take a step backward from you partner, increasing the distance between you. Use your understanding of momentum and Impulse to throw the object further and further but also catch it when its traveling faster and faster. This activity is all about Impulse. Think about the balance between force and time. Too much force will break your egg or balloon. Keeping stepping back until your object breaks. Record the distance between the two people and the number of tosses you completed.

After you complete the water balloon activity, try to think about a real world application or two where Impulse is used to minimize the force on an object or person for safety reasons.

Graded work for the week is;

Play the water balloon toss game and record your max distance and number of tosses completed. Write a no more than one page summary of how you used Momentum and Impulse during the game. Be sure to discuss the difference between a successful catch and when the balloon/egg broke. Include a sketch of a Force versus time graph for each situation.

Identify a real world application of how Impulse is used in safety applications. Describe the application you found and Explain how Impulse and momentum were used in the design to minimize force on an object or person.

Put BOTH explanations into one doc and send it via email with the subject line “Water Balloon Toss”.

Seniors this is your last week. Thanks for all your hard work this year. Congratulations to you all. I will see you at the drive by farewell tunnel on Thursday.
