Learning Intention:
Sucess Criteria
To understand the effect of unusually high or low values on a set of data.
1. I can identify an outlier in a set of data
2. I understand how the outlier affects the mean median and mode
3. I can decide on which is the most appropriate measure of center based on the presence of an outlier
Outlier
Outliers are data points that are unusually high or low compared to the rest of the data.
E.g. Consider a small class was asked how many siblings they had and these were the responses
0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 2, 2, 3, 3, 3, 3, 9
One of these values is not like the others - we would call the 9 an 'outlier'
The mean is made bigger by the outlier but the median is not. We say this is the mean being "distorted"
55 is much smaller, it is an outlier!
10 is much bigger, it is an outlier!
