Here's How to Fix It Fast Your PDF won't open. Adobe Reader crashes, shows an error, or nothing happens when you double-click. This guide shows you exactly how to fix it.
Before You Start — Quick Checks
Make sure these aren't causing your problem:

7 Fixes for PDF Not Opening in Adobe Reader
Fix 1: Update Adobe Reader
Outdated software causes most PDF opening failures. Open Adobe Reader, click Help, select Check for Updates, and install any available updates. Restart and try again.
Fix 2: Repair Installation
Corrupted program files can block PDFs from opening. Go to Help, then Repair Installation. Wait for it to complete and restart your computer.
Fix 3: Disable Protected Mode
Adobe's security feature sometimes blocks legitimate files. Go to Edit, then Preferences, then Security (Enhanced). Uncheck "Enable Protected Mode at startup" and restart Adobe Reader.
Fix 4: Clear the Cache
Corrupted temporary files prevent PDFs from loading. Close Adobe Reader. Press Windows + R, type %appdata%, navigate to Adobe then Acrobat, and delete the Cache folder.
Fix 5: Fix File Associations
Windows might be sending PDFs to the wrong program. Right-click any PDF, select Open with, choose Adobe Acrobat Reader, and check "Always use this app."
Fix 6: Open the PDF Differently
Instead of double-clicking, open Adobe Reader first. Go to File, then Open, and browse to your PDF manually. This bypasses shell integration issues.
Fix 7: Test in Another Reader
If nothing works, the PDF itself may be corrupted. Try opening it in Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Foxit Reader. If it opens there, use Save As to create a fresh copy.
