Heji conducted a thorough investigation on the reactivity of D3dgpA, an oxidoreductase belonging to the Gfo/Idh/MocA family. It was found that non-enzyme reactions transformed the 3"-oxo-glycoside products into stable isomers and cleavage products.

Previously, we identified a human gut bacteria that converts glycosides into aglycones. By comparison between whole cell and cell-free extract studies, two distinct systems are responsible for the metabolism of C- and O-glycosides; the former is induced and is also carried out by two separate enzyme systems.
