David Hoerr is a retired salesman, avid hunter and Donald Trump supporter. His son, Ryan, and his fiancé moved back in with his family three months ago after he lost his research job due to government defunding.
Ryan and his father do not talk politics. “I just keep my mouth shut,” David said. Ryan, who holds a doctorate in chemistry, is transitioning from Denver, Colorado, to Union, Missouri, where he now teaches at Union Community College. Despite different political views, having their son around has sparked a more active family life. “They do more, so we also started going out more again,” Elona, David's wife, said. Wednesdays they go out for dinner and live music.
David and Elona met at Union High School. He retired in 2019 and became the “house husband” according to his wife. “He made better money and I cleaned better but this is how it is right now,” she jokes. She works at Union City Hall and will retire soon. Most days, David takes care of his divorced father and mother, his inlaws or an elderly neighbor before he sits in his hunting stand near the house to look out for deer.
