Teddy Stewart, 20, and best friend Ryn Hayn who both identify as trans-masculine, live with Ryn’s queer siblings, Layla, 16, and Sam, 13.
Stewart and Hayn met in grade school and have been inseparable ever since despite both being romantically involved with other partners. They have supported each other throughout their medical transitioning which they began when they both turned 18, and today they live as roommates and care for Stewart’s brother and sister.
Stewart has temporary legal guardianship of his siblings due to their parents’ substance abuse issues. Stewart was granted custody after their mother abandoned both children at a grocery store from which she fled to avoid being arrested for shoplifting. His willingness to step up saved the kids from being placed into foster care.
Despite being only a few years older than the two children, Stewart is providing a stable and loving home. Parenting Layla and Sam is not easy; both have experienced trauma and are receiving psychiatric treatment. Layla suffers from Borderline Personality Disorder and must be carefully monitored, as there is significant risk of self-harm.
These are not small challenges, and living as a queer family in a small town in the Midwest comes with its own difficulties. Despite all this, Stewart and Hayn face the task with dedication, humor and love.
