Growing up with a mother who struggled with addiction, 27-year-old Lacey Rapp was mainly raised by her grandparents, Carl and Cynthia. As a gay, biracial woman living in Missouri, Lacey says that their love and support was life-changing.
When Carl passed away in February 2024, Cynthia had to move out of the home she’d shared with her husband of 60 years and onto their farm and ranch.
After breaking free from a slumlord, Lacey and her partner Hailey are also moving onto the ranch— fixing up the property, sifting through what Carl left behind and being there for Cynthia.
Lacey Rapp, 27, walks with her dog, Apollo, on her grandmother's horse ranch in Union, Mo.
Two of the Rapp family’s three horses are pictured at the ranch. The same year that Lacey's grandfather, Carl Rapp, died, his wife, Cynthia, also lost a horse and two beloved dogs.
Lacey and her friend, Chris McLaughlin, disassemble one of her grandparents’ old tables in order to restore it at her family’s ranch.
Apollo, Lacey's dog, walks through the workshop of the Rapp's horse ranch. After Cynthia had to move out of the home she shared with her late husband, some of their old furniture was wrapped up and stored at the ranch.
Lacey's partner, Hailey Barczewski, waits with a dolly to move furniture at the family’s ranch .The day before the couple’s first date, Lacey’s grandfather suddenly passed away. Lacey had been excited to tell him about Hailey.
Lacey talks to her partner, Hailey Barczewski, as she arranges books in the basement apartment they’ve moved into at the Rapp family’s ranch. Lacey is looking forward to building a future at the ranch with Hailey, just like her grandparents did many years before. “I am blessed to be here with the love of my life.”
Lacey ruffles Cynthia's hair as she walks through the living room.
Cynthia and Lacey, share a moment at their ranch. Lacey said that her grandfather asked her to help with the ranch and watch over her grandmother for her health and safety, as well as her happiness. “I’m fulfilling his wish every day the best I can," she said.
