April Spence, 30, sits on the porch between tall white columns of the stately blue home where she lives with Kaylee Read, 25, Breanna Johns, 28, and several other women recovering from addiction. “Living here saved my life," April said.
April is 120 days sober and has 8 more months of sobriety before she can see her eldest son again. Meanwhile Kaylee, two weeks sober, starts a new job at a plant nursery this week while juggling rent payments, visiting her 3-year-old daughter and working to maintain her sobriety after a recent relapse.
“I'm proud of you. Keep it up,” they call to each other as they exit the door for court appointments, job interviews and meetings with their parole officers. They cook for each other, accompany one another to court and form a fierce support system as they navigate staying clean in this new phase of their lives.
Kaylee Read, 25, sits on the porch of a recovery residence in Union, nicknamed “sober house,” while getting ready for her first day of work at a new job. Read is two weeks clean from using methamphetamine.

April stands in the doorway of her apartment at the sober house before heading out for a cigarette while Breanna has breakfast.
Kaylee spends time with her daughter Kynzlee, 3, while Kaylee's mother gets her hair done. Kaylee's mother is taking care of Kynzlee while Kaylee lives in sober house.
Kynzlee hangs out with her mom, Kaylee, while Kaylee collects laundry.
