In conjunction with the International Day of Older Persons 2026, MPS Geriatric SIG proudly organised "Your Golden Years: Community Outreach Programme", a health awareness programme held at Tatt Khalsa Diwan Selangor, Chow Kit on 11 October 2026.ย
Celebrating Older Adults, Advancing Healthy Ageing
The International Day of Older Persons reminds us to recognise the contributions of older people, uphold their dignity, and promote opportunities for them to live healthy, fulfilling, and independent lives.
Marking our second community outreach initiative of the year, "Your Golden Years" aims to raise awareness about frailty among older adults and caregivers, while promoting healthy, active, and independent ageing through education, community engagement, and multidisciplinary care.
Our initiative also reflects the vision of the World Health Organizationโs (WHO) Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021โ2030): to collectively improve the well-being of older people, their families, and the communities in which they live.
Bringing Healthcare Professionals and the Community Together
The programme brought together a dedicated multidisciplinary team comprising geriatricians, pharmacists, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and dietitians, reaching 30 older adults and 13 caregivers.
Participants gained valuable insights through interactive health talks and personalised counselling covering:
Live demonstration of strength and balance exercises
Understanding frailty and cognitive impairment
Falls prevention and risk reduction
Safe and appropriate medication use among older adults
Home modifications for safer, independent living
Improving muscle strength and maintaining mobility
Healthy eating and optimal nutrition
Beyond sharing knowledge, the programme provided a meaningful platform for healthcare professionals to engage directly with older adults and caregivers, addressing their concerns and empowering them to make informed choices for healthier ageing.
A Heartfelt Thank You!
We extend our sincere appreciation to our community partners, Tatt Khalsa Diwan Selangor and Sikh Home Center, for their warm hospitality, generous support, and the opportunity to serve our senior citizens.
We are also grateful to Malaysian Society of Geriatric Medicine for supporting our initiative from conception to execution.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to all participating healthcare professionals, volunteers, older adults, and caregivers for making this initiative a meaningful success.
Together, let's continue building an age-friendly community where every older adult is empowered to age healthily, safely, and with dignity!
