Revised Proposal

Reimagining The Open Interval as a stronger community exhibition space while keeping the original concept of Pause & Focus. 

The revised proposal keeps the original concept of Pause & Focus, but develops it into a stronger community exhibition space. Instead of only focusing on quietness and enclosure, the redesign balances stillness with public activity. The building becomes a sequence of intervals where visitors move from the open plaza into shaded thresholds, filtered exhibition spaces, water courtyards, workshop areas, and framed viewing spaces. 

The revised design direction transforms The Open Interval from a mainly quiet and reflective space into a more active public experience. The project still creates moments of pause, but these moments are now placed within a stronger community journey, where exhibition, learning, gathering, and reflection support each other.

Stillness + Activity

The project keeps its calm atmosphere while adding stronger public and community functions.

Pause + Movement

Visitors move through a sequence of spaces, with moments of pause placed between active zones.

Light + Climate

Filtered daylight is used not only for atmosphere, but also to reduce glare and improve comfort.

Water + Cooling

The water courtyard remains a reflective element, but also supports comfort and microclimate cooling.

1. Open Plaza

The journey begins in the public plaza, where visitors arrive, gather, and connect with the surrounding civic space.

2. Shaded Threshold

A shaded transition space slows down movement and separates the busy outdoor environment from the calmer interior experience.

3. Exhibition Space

The exhibition area uses filtered daylight and controlled views to help visitors focus on displays, stories, and community content.

4. Water Courtyard

The courtyard becomes a pause point, creating reflection, calmness, and a cooler atmosphere within the building.

5. Workshop / Reading Area

This area supports learning, discussion, making, and quiet engagement for students, artists, researchers, and local users.

6. Viewing Deck

The journey ends with a framed view back toward the site, allowing visitors to reconnect with the landscape and surrounding context.

This journey strengthens the meaning of “interval” by creating clear transitions between public activity and quiet reflection. 

1. Site Connection

The revised design strengthens the relationship between the building, Dataran Malawati, pedestrian movement, and the surrounding heritage context.

2. Public Activation

Exhibition, workshop, café, shaded seating, and gathering spaces are improved to make the building more useful for the community.

3. Climate Response

Deeper roof overhangs, shaded walkways, cross ventilation, filtered daylight, and water elements improve comfort in Malaysia’s tropical climate.

4. Spatial Journey

The project becomes a sequence of intervals: open plaza, shaded threshold, exhibition, water courtyard, reading area, and viewing deck.

5. Human Experience

The design supports both quiet reflection and social interaction, allowing different users to experience the building in different ways.

The revised proposal improves environmental performance by responding more carefully to Malaysia’s tropical climate. The design uses shaded circulation, controlled daylight, cross ventilation, rain protection, and water elements to create a cooler and more comfortable experience. 

Filtered Daylight

Reduces glare while keeping the interior atmospheric.

Allows air movement through openings and semi-open spaces.

Deep Overhangs

Protect users from rain and direct sun.

Water Courtyard

Creates calmness and supports microclimate cooling.

Reduce heat gain and create gradual transitions between spaces.

AI supported the revised proposal by helping me compare the original design with possible improvements. It suggested ways to strengthen public activity, improve climate response, clarify circulation, and connect the project more strongly to the site. However, the final decisions were filtered and adjusted based on my own design judgment. 

AI suggested shaded circulation and climate strategies.
I selected the ideas suitable for the tropical site.

I adapted them into exhibition, workshop, café, and gathering areas.
