鬼あり。食水と名づく。長き髪乱れて、面
に覆下（り）塞がりて、物見ること能
はず。 飢渇の火、身の内を焼く。 耐え難さに、自ら河の辺に行きて、水を飲
まむとすれば、水を守る鬼ども来
りて、 追ひて打たむとすれば、逃げ走り
惑ふ。又、自ら河を渡りたる人の
足の滴りを舐りて、命を生く。昔、
酒に水を入れて売り、 蚯蚓の沈
みたるをも顧みずして、酒を売りし人
これに墜つ。
There is a (type of) ghost. They are named ‘Jikisui’. Their long hair is tangled; hiding and blocking their faces, and they are not able to see things. The fire of hunger and thirst burn inside their bodies. Due to the difficulty of bearing it, they go to the river’s edge and try to drink water, but the demons who guard the water come and try to shew them and strike them, making them flee in confusion. Also, they subsist by licking the water drops from the feet of those who cross the river. A long time ago, people who sold rice wine diluted wine with water, and mixed worms into rice wine without thinking twice went down into this [hungry ghost] realm.
耐え難さに、自ら河の辺に行きて、水を飲
まむとすれば、水を守る鬼ども来りて、 追ひて打たむとすれば、逃げ走り惑ふ。
Due to the difficulty of bearing it, they go to the river’s edge and try to drink water, but the demons who guard the water come and try to shew them and strike them, making them flee in confusion.
On the right hand, the water-guard ghost is chasing and striking the hungry ghost on the left hand side.
On the right hand, here is a hungry ghost that is licking water from a crossing river person's feet, but the person seems cannot feel it.
又、自ら河を渡りたる人の足の滴りを舐りて、命を生く。
Also, they subsist by licking the water drops from the feet of those who cross the river.
昔、酒に水を入れて売り、 蚯蚓の沈みたるをも顧みずして、酒を売りし人これに墜つ。
A long time ago, people who sold rice wine diluted wine with water, and mixed worms into rice wine without thinking twice went down into this [hungry ghost] realm.
From passage two, it is assumed that people on the right side sold wine mixed by water and worms, and they turned out to become hungry ghost on the left side. This displayed a ironic visual shock.
