At the bank of Ganges River, there were 500 hungry ghosts. For eternity, they were not able to get the water. Even though they went to the bank of the river, all the water appeared like fire, and they cannot drink it. At that time, the Buddha took up place under the Udumbara flower by the riverbank. The 500 hungry ghosts went to the Buddha’s presence, they humbly said: “Our suffering is difficult to bear, we pledge for your help.” At that time, the Buddha preached them the sin of greed for the sake of the various hungry ghost. Although the ghost heard it, they humbly said: “we are assailed by suffering, the words did not go into our hearts.” They are allowed to drink water by using the power of the Buddha, and the Buddha preached various teachings to the ghosts. The ghosts heard it, disposed the form of hungry ghost immediately, and took on heavenly bodies as the result.
