When Mokuren first acquired the six divine powers, he wanted to recompense his deceased mother, but when he discovered his mother’s reincarnated place, he saw his mother reborn in the hungry ghost realm. Mokuren cried with grief, put food in a bowl, went to his mother’s place, and granted it to her. His mother intended to eat it, but the food burst into flames before it entered her mouth. Mokuren, in his sadness, went to the Buddha’s presence and humbly asked for a strategy that ought to rescue his mother.
