Usrah in Action 1 (SCSH 2163) is one of IIUM's University Required Courses (UniCORE) that was established in 2020 to increase the students’ awareness and knowledge of their duties and responsibilities as Muslims in relation to Farḍ Kifāyah practices and skills as well as translating the concept of community engagement through community profiling and mapping. This course is usually taken by students in their first year.
Last semester, mKitchen was given the responsibility of handling one of the sections in SCSH 2163, with Prof. Suhaimi as the instructor. Section 17 has 42 students and they were divided into 11 groups. Each group is required to do a profiling of their chosen community and at the end of the semester, to submit a documentation and portfolio as well as present their profiling and suggested solutions to the issues or problems faced by the community. Individually, each student also needs to keep a reflective journal of their experience throughout the course.
On 19th January 2023, Section 17 received the Silver Award in the 2nd University in Action Symposium held at the IIUM Cultural Centre, IIUM Gombak Campus. The symposium showcased a total of 173 community projects by 3420 students, and guided by 201 voluntary instructors (including mKitchen!). This award marks our students' success in their attempt at community engagement with mKitchen as their guide. Kudos to Prof. Suhaimi and his students!
