Since its establishment in 2021, mKitchen has always aimed to provide free food for the needy in addition to give management and culinary training for its student trainees (currently on its 3rd batch). The idea of having a "Rumah Makan" was inspired by the Rumah Makan Percuma (RMP) Ayam Bismi in Kedah, where free food is given to approximately 400 individuals within the community on a daily basis. The modus operandi of RMP Ayam Bismi includes utilizing chicken supply from their own poultry farm and rice donation from the community.
While the circumstances are different with mKitchen, the team has been in operation for slightly over a year. With the experience gained and some funds generated from sales and donations, that dream of setting up its own free food eatery for the needy materialized with the launch of Rumah Makan mKitchen (RMMK) on 31st August 2022.
On 31st August 2022, in conjunction with the 65th Independence Day of Malaysia, mKitchen had launched its Rumah Makan mKitchen at Dataran Masjid Al Syakirin Gombak from 12pm to 1pm. The ceremony was officiated by IIUM Rector, Prof. Emeritus Tan Sri Dato’ Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, who was also joined by the Dean of Kulliyyah of Economics and Management Sciences (KENMS), Prof. Dr. Gairuzazmi Mat Ghani, in distributing the free food to about 200 asnaf and parish committee members of Masjid Al Syakirin Gombak. Special home-cooked meals were prepared that morning by a few mKItchen team members and student volunteers from Mahallah Aminah. The team of volunteers was led by Dr. Ghazali from mKitchen.
Two weeks prior to the launch, a crowdfunding campaign was raised to collect funds for the event. A total of RM 1400 was targeted and successfully collected, which was used in the purchases of materials and other food preparation. The crowdfunding campaign was shared among the IIUM community via social media.
The mkitchen team, led by Dr. Ghazali, planned the following menu for the big day:
Chicken Kurma
Cucumber and carrot acar
Omelette
Sambal belacan
White rice
Sirap limau beverage
The venue for the event was Masjid Al Syakirin Gombak. Here is one of mKitchen's team members, Dr. Dzuljastri, visiting the venue prior to the event and during clean-up with one of the volunteers.
On the morning of the event, 16 student volunteers were brought by Dr. Azizah from Mahallah Aminah to Masjid Al Syakirin Gombak. They helped the mKitchen team in preparing the food, better known as rewang or working together in the Malay language. The Rector has also mingled with the staff and student volunteers in serving food to the guests.
Alhamdulillah, the launching of Rumah Makan mKitchen went on smoothly. The mKitchen team hopes that this initiative will continue to operate successfully in the long run. May Allah ease our journey, insyaAllah.
