What is Copyright and Fair Use?
Copyright is when you use someone else’s artistic work, (graphic, music, etc.) without permission. Copyright is a type of intellectual property that protects these original works made by the creator. There are three basic requirements for copyright protection: that which is to be protected must be a work of authorship, it must be original, and it must be fixed in a tangible medium of expression which would be a graphic, picture, music, etc. We can get around this with Fair Use Policy though. Fair Use Policy is a legal doctrine that says you can reuse copyright-protected material under certain circumstances without getting permission from the copyright owner. This means any copying of copyrighted material is done for a limited and “transformative” purpose. Some examples of Fair use policy in action include commentary, search engines, criticism, news reporting, research, etc.
