With ample experience working with students who learn differently in a classroom setting and one-on-one, I am able to offer students strategies to improve skills that will make them successful in the classroom. I have experience tutoring at the middle and high school level.

Comprehension
Students who struggle with comprehension have great difficulty understanding what they read. I can offer students strategies to support them in navigating a complex text. In middle school, many times students have great difficulty deciphering their textbooks. Although my content specialty is English Language Arts, I can support students at the comprehension level of all subjects. Additionally, I am certified to teach all content areas at the secondary level for students with disabilities (grades 7-12).
Decoding/Encoding
A student's ability to decode a text is his or her ability to read with fluency, accuracy, and expression. Students who struggle with decoding may also struggle with comprehension. A student's encoding relate to his or her spelling ability . With training in the Preventing Academic Failure and Orton-Gillingham programs, I am qualified to help improve student's reading and spelling abilities. By using professionally prepared lesson plans and word lists, I can provide students with "spelling-rules" and strategies to support them in decoding and encoding.

Writing
Students in middle school are learning to write cohesive and organized paragraphs. They slowly progress to more complicated essays. In order to achieve adequate progression, students need a solid foundation of writing strategies and skills. Such skills include; sentence structure, sentence combining, sentence expansion, sentence completion, tense and number agreement, topic sentence strategies etc. Depending on the students writing skills, other skills including essay cohesion, planning and outlining strategies, and introduction and conclusion paragraph strategies are just some of the skill Is can provide to students during a tutoring session. With training in the Teaching Basic Writing Skills Program at the middle school level, I am qualified to help improve students' writing abilities.

Reading
In high school, students are reading classic literary texts like Shakespeare. I can support students with background information and relate it back to their personal experiences. Many classic literary texts are timeless (hence why they have become classics) thus there is always a way to relate these classics to students' lives. I can support students by providing them with reading strategies to help decipher and understand complex texts including research and peer-reviewed articles in preparation for an extensive paper. (see below for writing services). I can also support students with vocabulary growth to support their comprehension of complex texts.
Writing
Although multiple subject-areas require students to know how to write, the responsibility lies solely on the English teacher. Since writing can have a subjective nature, this can be confusing and frustrating for students. I am very passionate about teaching students how to write and am advocate for writing instruction. Thus, I tutor students to provide them with writing strategies that will help them write research essays, literary essays, or DBQ essays (document based question). I can support students across all subject areas in writing essays including DBQ essays, which students are required to complete for the NYS Regents Exams. With training in the Teaching Basic Writing Skills Program at the high school level, I am qualified to help improve students' writing abilities.
