Creation of media materials
In this workshop, the participants will create media materials by conducting interviews, writing articles, creating short videos and presenting them. This workshop will help them to develop skills in writing, interviewing, and making short videos while teaching them how to craft an informative and engaging news piece.
This workshop aims to train young people in creating media content, and more specifically articles and videos with interviews, through the learning-by-doing method.
Young people aged 16 to 29, NEETs
Time frame
The time frame is around 2 hours and 30 minutes (including breaks), but it can also be extended.
Background
We chose to focus on this topic in the developed workshop because the media space is the place where most people get informed about news and it would be interesting for young people to understand the process of creating the media materials that most of them consume daily.
For the workshop, we will need a seminar room, but the location should be in a safe area with a lot of people around, because the participants will take interviews with strangers.
To successfully conduct the workshop, we will need to have the following equipment and materials:
At least one smartphone or camera with a microphone per team to record the interviews, videos, and process the materials
Paper sheets and pens
Notebooks (one per team)
Internet connection
It will also be good if the participants can use laptops or computers while preparing the media materials, but it can also be done on their smartphones
Prepared Content Plans (one per team)
Prepared scripts with steps on what an article includes and what a good short video includes (one of each per team)
Editing Software (Recommendation: Canva.com)

Set up a seminar room with enough chairs and tables, and a projector is also needed. Participants should have a clear view of the trainer, the projections, and the flipchart.
Ensure all equipment is ready for immediate use. If there are any computers/laptops, they must be connected, with accessible guest accounts if needed, and have writing (e.g., Word, Google Docs) and editing software (e.g., Canva). Participants should be logged into online tools.
For filming, the participants will use smartphones, or if they have their cameras and microphones, no extra setup is required.
Starting The Activity
First, the facilitator will talk to the participants about the media, interviews, research, and formats for presenting information on social networks.
The participants will be told how media material should be structured and what it should contain. Then they will be divided into teams of 3 or 2 and each team will come up with a suitable topic for which they will have to make a media material consisting of an article + a short video
THEY WILL BE PROVIDED WITH A PRINTED SCRIPT ON HOW TO MAKE SHORT VIDEOS AND WHAT THE STRUCTURE OF AN ARTICLE IS
Each team will be given a Content Plan sheet that they must fill out for their topic. The topics will be indicative, so deviations and interpretations will be allowed.
Teams will also need to prepare interview questions (minimum 5)
To prepare their media material, participants will complete several tasks
1. Each team will have to go outside and will have 40 minutes to interview 2 to 4 local people.
The interviews can be filmed and then part of the short videos, or in the form of a survey, and they can be anonymous.
Each interview must consist of a minimum of 5 questions
Each team will be able to take with them a notebook, sheets of paper, and pens, but only one phone per team
While conducting the interviews, the participants will also have to think about the overall vision of the media material, that is, for the video, they must shoot additional footage to enrich it, and for the article, they will need to have suitable photographic material
2. The teams will return to the activity room, and the facilitator will ask them how far they have come and if they are experiencing any difficulties
3. The teams will have time to shape their media materials.
The expected results from each team at the end of the activity are a written online article, a short video about the article topic and an interview included in the article or in the video.
At the end of the workshop:
Each team will present its media material
There will be time for reflection
