I trained to be a Forest and Nature Therapy Guide with Ecowisdom because I love the idea of supporting people who are interested in exploring and deepening their connection with nature, and I appreciated that Ecowisdom's approach emphasized accessibility.
It was intriguing to learn that there is a name (Sit Spot) for something I have always loved to do - sit quietly in nature, on a regular basis, for long periods of time.
I sometimes come away from my Sit Spot more clarity or deepened insights into my personal life....even though the practices are intended to help us turn our focus away from our obligations, distractions and busy minds.
“The quieter you become, the more you are able to hear.” Rumi
I have offered several Mindful Nature Connection (Forest Bathing) programs with climate activists. Personally, I have learned to be very intentional about balancing "all the feels" evoked by climate work with experiences that fuel my energy, my passion and my commitment. Time in nature does all of this for me.
When I work with naturalist groups, they tell me that they enjoy the feelings of solitude and connection, without needing to name a plant, or update their E-bird lists... at least, not in the moment!
My training and volunteer work as a Crisis Responder with the Kids Help Phone Crisis Text Line has also grounded my approach to facilitating Mindful Nature Connection experiences. When we are dealing with situations that seem beyond our control, or that have no easy fix, we can sometimes feel overwhelmed and powerless. We can't always change a situation, but we can turn towards what brings us a sense of peace, strength and moments of joy. Mindful nature connection practices are one way to do this. I wrote a bit more about this in my local newspaper, It's Ok to feel Ok. Balancing Grief and Joy in Turbulent Times.
It's also ok to NOT feel ok. We are living in unprecedented times. This resource can be a first step in getting support to expand your ability to cope.
I offer Mindful Nature Connection (Forest Bathing) programs to community groups, friend groups and families, support groups, etc. Contact me at Beth_mckinlay@yahoo.ca if you have an idea and we can explore it together.
