Community interpreting requires a high level of communication skills. We must never allow people to think, "Is that all it takes to interpret?" Incorrect interpretation can lead to serious consequences in healthcare and government settings. Interpreters must strictly follow a "Code of Ethics"—such as confidentiality and neutrality—which is why proper, structured training makes a difference.

４.　Shadowing Practice 

Shadowing is a practice method where you listen to spoken language and repeat it out loud immediately, with just a slight delay (about 0.5 to 1 second) like a shadow. It helps build the core listening and speaking skills needed for community interpreting.

Why is Shadowing Useful for Interpreters?

• Mastering Natural Sentence Structures:
  Small connecting words—like prepositions in English (in, on, at, to) or particles in Japanese (ga, de, to, ni)—are often hard to learn through grammar rules alone. Shadowing helps your brain naturally absorb how these words are used in real-life speech.

• Sounding Natural with Intonation & Tone:
  By mimicking a native speaker's pitch, rise and fall, and subtle vocal nuances, you will naturally acquire proper intonation and sound clear, natural, and trustworthy when interpreting.

• Improving Listening & Focus:
  Forces you to listen intently to every detail, training your ears to catch exact phrasing.

• Smoother Delivery:
  Builds speech stamina and speed, helping you render interpretations without hesitation or awkward pauses.

• Better Memory Retention:
  Strengthens short-term memory as you hold incoming speech in your mind while simultaneously speaking.

Step-by-Step Practice Guide

1. Listen Only: Listen to the audio clip without looking at the text.

2. Mumbling: Follow the audio by whispering or quietly repeating the words under your breath.

3. Full Shadowing: Speak clearly and at normal volume, matching the speaker’s pace and tone.

4. Text Check: Compare with the transcript to review any missed words or mispronounced sounds.

※Choosing the Right Practice Material
Use Real-Life Content:
Avoid anime or fantasy phrases that are rarely used in real life (for example, moves or shoutouts like "Hadouken!"). Choose narrated videos or audio based on real-life settings, such as news, daily conversations, or official guidance.

（日本語）シャドーイング練習

シャドーイングとは、耳で聞いた音声を影（Shadow）のように0.5秒〜1秒ほど遅れてそのまま真似して発声するトレーニング手法です。コミュニティ通訳に必要な「聴き取る力」と「声に出す力」を同時に鍛えます。

通訳における効果

• 助詞や前置詞の使い方が自然と身につく
  日本語の「が・で・と・に」などの助詞や、英語の「in・on・at・to」などの前置詞は、文法として暗記するだけでは使いこなすのが困難です。シャドーイングを繰り返すことで、これらの正しい使い方が感覚的に頭と口に定着します。

• 抑揚（イントネーション）やトーンが身につき、自然で聞き取りやすい発話になる
  ネイティブスピーカーの声の上がり下がり（トーン）やリズム、ニュアンスをそのまま真似ることで、相手にとって聞き取りやすく、自然で説得力のある話し方が身につきます。

• 聴解力と集中力の強化
  音声を一字一句聞き逃さない集中力を養い、正確に聞き取る耳を鍛えます。

• 訳出のスムーズ化
  言葉を詰まらせずに流暢に声に出すスピード感とリズム感を養います。

• 記憶保持（Retention）の向上
  短期記憶で言葉を保持しながら同時に発声する脳の切り替えスピードを高めます。

練習のステップ

1. Listen only：まずは原稿（テキスト）を見ずに音声だけを聞く。

2. Mumbling：口の中で小さく呟くように音声を追いかける。

3. Full Shadowing：はっきりとした声で正確に発声する。

4. Text Check：最後にスクリプトを見て、聞き取れなかった箇所や間違えた部分を確認する。

※教材選びの注意点
日常や現実で使える音声を選ぶ
アニメやゲームに出てくる言葉（例：「波動拳！」などの現実で使わないセリフ）は練習に向きません。ニュースや日常会話、ナレーションなど、現実の生活シーン（Real-life settings）に基づいた音声を使って練習しましょう。
