Educational Theatre Productions

  • General Aims and Objectives for English (CSEC) and Literatures in English (CAPE) Syllabus, accomplished through our works:

1. We aim to develop an understanding of the nature and function of literature; drama is meant to be seen, poetry is meant to be heard and prose is meant to be read.

2. We encourage an understanding that there are various acceptable interpretations of a literary work. This is done through availability of director notes and viva voces from every show.

3. We encourage an appreciation of literature by the demonstration of our passion for the art form.

4. We showcase different contexts/time periods through our setting, costuming, language, music, props etc. This achieves visual appeal and audience participation.

LOVE is... THE GATSBY AFFAIR (2016)

Milwaz Productions showcased a reenactment of Jazz Revelry and the theatrical journey of love, marriage, money and fantasy, through the most sizzling, piping and sassy Jazz era; 1920’s; held by our local host J. Gatsby- Zachary Sosa entitled, “Love is… The Gatsby Affair,” on Saturday 12th November, 2016, from 5:30pm at Bishop Anstey & Trinity College East auditorium.

This event was a reenactment of one of the largest parties held in Long Island, New York during the 1920’s, described in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s 1925 award winning novel “The Great Gatsby”; through a four Act, theatre in the round play, by Director & Producer Janieka Tudor-Baptiste. It embodied a perfect depiction of one of the lavish parties, thrown by Mr. Gatsby as an act of pursuit of his love to Daisy and it promises to transport you to that, “age of miracles”.

A special feature of this experience was the live Jazz band and performances, with a modern touch, and the opportunity to be encircled by persons with an assortment of 1920’s dress and sensations. Special prizes were given for the best dressed patrons and those who intently patterned after the era with vigor and style.

In preparation for this major event Bishop Anstey & Trinity College East Sixth Form hosted a 1920’s Dress up Day on Friday 28th October, 2016. Additionally, on that same day, students and parents were invited to join the Milwaz Productions cast and crew for this production, at Trincity Mall, for their flash MOB presentation.

Six hundred and fifty five patrons (655), including students from forms 3-6 of the secondary school system in Trinidad and Tobago, including Vessigny Secondary School, St. Joseph Convent, St. Joseph, Arima North Secondary and Arima South Secondary School, were able to have a visual representation of the prose text, "The Great Gatsby," that they have been studying for the past few months as part of the Literatures in English Syllabus. They also got the opportunity to dress up like 'dolls' and 'old sports' of the era as they experienced a two (2) hour long theatrical cocktail styled party presentation.

WAJANG THERAPY (Oct, 2017)

Milwaz Productions also hosted ‘Wajang Therapy’, an educational theatre production, based on William Shakespeare’s 1953 comedy, “The Taming of the Shrew”. The show was held on Friday 20th October, 2017 (students show) Saturday 21st October, 2017 (general public) and re-runs 19th- 20th November, 2017.

The production exposed our national community (teachers and students included), to the prestigious Shakespearean art form and language as the director stayed true to the Shakespearean language, mode of dress and mannerism but inculcated Caribbean flare, music and other conventions to illustrate that the issues are timeless.

Eight hundred and ninety four persons (894) attended Wajang Therapy; seventy- five (75) of which were students from our student show. This number of patrons for our student show was unfortunate as there was inclement weather and severe flooding on that day resulting in cancellation of the attendance of most schools. Nonetheless, students from the following schools were able to benefit from the experience:

  1. Mayaro Composite

  2. Queens Royal College

  3. Arima North Secondary

  4. Arima South Secondary

  5. Polytechnic Private School

  6. Toco Composite

  7. Bishop Anstey High School East

  8. St. Joseph Convent, St. Joseph

  9. Bishop Anstey & Trinity College East Sixth Form

All proceeds assisted with the scholarship funding of the trip to The American Shakespeare Centre, Staunton, Virginia (April 2018).

Apart from vocal delivery and writing capabilities, performers were expected to accentuate their verbal performance by adding necessary staging conventions- costuming, sound, dramatization, dance, dramatic entrances and exits, props, backdrops etc. This provided participants and attendees with a thorough experiential learning experience. AMANI: A raisin in the sun (Jan, 2019)

Milwaz Productions presented AMANI: an African themed benefit production, with a featured teaser adaptation of ‘A Raisin in the Sun’ by Lorraine Hansberry. The inspiration was derived from the need to offset the medical expenses for an emergency surgery of Retired Police Constable Tudor; who was gainfully employed at the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service from June 1989- June 2015 and has served our production company for the past five years.

Beyond entertainment and honorary responsibility , our motivation for using this literary piece was our alignment with the company’s educational vision and permit the student of BATCE Sixth Form with the opportunity to review this play for their Internal Assessment 2019. Four hundred and fifty (450) patrons attended the show, including the Literatures in English students of BATCE Sixth Form.
