Belts are not given, they are earned. In order to advance in rank, you must take a test displaying your knowledge in front of a panel of black belts, the entire class, and any audience members. At no point should you ask to test! It is up to the instructors, ultimately Sensei Mike Hess, whether or not you are ready for your test. You will be approached when we believe you are ready.
Furthermore, family is encouraged to come and spectate/record the event. It can be a great reminder years later of the progress you have made.
A white belt is the first belt and will be given upon officially enrolling in class. There are no requirements for obtaining a white belt.
In our style, the order of the belts are as follows:
A rank of "No Belt" will be given to those who meet any of the following requirements:
Anyone with a rank of "No Belt" is required to line up next to the lowest ranking member (back row, far left).
One of the rank belt tests will be required to be a "heat" test in which the test will be conducted in a 90 degree + room.

By going to the individual belt rank pages, you can view the requirements for all belts up through brown belt. Upon making a new belt, you will be able to login and view the katas you have already learned in class. The videos are instructional but are not meant to be learned from. This will allow you to perfect the katas you already learned and allow in-class time to be used for new material. These videos can also be used to answer any questions prior to teaching the kata to someone (rank belts only).
Lastly, it is important no one learns the katas ahead of their level as it can create bad habits and is unfair to those following the rules. That being said, it is expected that as you gain access to these katas, you share them with no one.
