I have been interested in the martial arts from a very young age. When my daughter decided she wanted to try karate, I jumped at the opportunity to pursue my dream and do something with her. Of course her being young at the age of only about 5 or 6 when we started she had other dreams of her own. When she dropped out to play sports I dedicated my time to her dream. I still went to class sporadically but not enough to earn my rank as if I went full time. I saw many students go through and even trained them to earn their black belts. I think I stayed a brown belt for about 7 years due to shift work, both my daughters in sports, and injuries of my own. I earned my black belt in 2012 and then in January of 2013 I broke my ankle (not related to karate). Then after a slow recovery back to class I started training again but once again an injury set back happened when I tore my rotator cuff (not directly related to karate either). I have been back in class steady for about 7 months now training for my 2nd degree. You don’t buy belts with Sensei Hess they are presented to you after you have earned them. Sensei Hess and the students he attracts are the reason I’m still in karate and I will continue my journey with him as I look to what the future holds for me.
