Frank Beall and North Augusta Martial Arts hosted the first Virgil Kimmey Memorial Karate College event on May 2. Instructors from across the area, and some from as far away as Nevada, came to teach at the event. A charity event, all proceeds from the karate college benefitted a local animal rescue group and to fund a scholarship in Kimmey’s name.
This year’s instructors included Terry Shea, Casper Fagerberg, Beall, Abia Williams, Mike Hess Tyrone Tablada, BJ Clark, Bill Sanford and Derek Croley. Beall was promoted to 6th Degree Black belt in the International Association of TAI Martial Arts, as well as Terry Shea and Derek Croley being inducted into the association as black belt members.
There were instructors teaching Iron Palm techniques and demonstrating brick breaking, Wing Tsun Kung Fu, practical application of karate katas, point sparring drills, Brazilian jiu-jitsu techniques, classical Japanese jujutsu drills, hand-to-hand self-defense, Kenpo karate techniques, Kali stick drills and shuriken and knife throwing.
More than 35 people took part in the event, with many being higher ranked practitioners.
The event collected more than $650.
With the success of this first event, North Augusta Martial Arts is already planning a bigger and better event next year.
