The Atomic City Festival on Saturday in New Ellenton will have something for everyone, from the Atomic City Meltdown Chili Cook-off, to a womanless beauty contest.
The festival will be held from 10 a.m.-midnight at the municipal park on Main Street.
The chili cook-off will be one of the big events on Saturday morning. “Anyone can bring chili to the cook-off,” said Jackie Keenan, committee member. “There are three categories, nuclear meltdown, which is as hot as you can make it, but you have to be able to eat it yourself, regular chili, which is called cold standby and white chili is called mushroom cloud.” There will be first and second place winners in all three categories.
After the cook-off, there will be a womanless “beauty” contest sponsored by Graves Auto Salvage. “We have guys representing area businesses or just anybody from city council to the police chief — you have to come see the beautiful outfits,” said Keenan.
Also during the festival, the Atomic City Cruisers will hold the fourth annual Car and Truck Show from 10 a.m.to 4:30 p.m. “We usually have close to 100 cars and there will be exotic imports, cars and trucks, late models, street rodi and muscle cars,” Keenan said.
The Christian Wrestling Federation will also provide entertainment.
Carnival rides will be provided by Hartley’s Amusement and karate demonstrations will be held by Twin Dragon and Mike Hess Karate. Throughout the day a variety of music will be played by local D.J. “TC.”
“There will be a lot of crafters, plenty of food and a coloring contest for children," said Annie Mae Ford, committee member. “Jewelry, caps, collectable knives, plenty of food— barbecue ribs and chicken, fried fish, funnel cake and shaved ice will all be available.”
On Saturday evening, Soul Dimension Show Band from Augusta will be in concert from 7-11 p.m. and a fireworks show sponsored by the New Ellenton Fire Department will be held at 9:30 p.m. “We want everyone to come out and enjoy the fun day,” said Eartha Rogers, committee member. “Everything is for the city to rebuild our park and replace welcome signs.”
