When someone asks me, I always say that my favorite decade in cinema is the ‘80s. However, a very close second would be the decade that followed.
Hi, I’m Mike Giuffrida, and I’m here to talk about my favorite sci-fi films of the ‘90s.
In the ‘90s, we were all treated to visual spectacles, thanks in large part to James Cameron’s “Terminator 2: Judgment Day” and Steven Spielberg’s “Jurassic Park.” Both movies showed filmmakers and audiences everywhere the potential of computer-animated graphics could be in a live-action feature.
But visuals weren’t the only treat. The ‘90s featured a variety of action-adventures that were anchored on sci-fi. There was Alex Proyas’ “Dark City,” which featured a detective story in a city run by an organization comprised of telekinetic aliens – an organization that nobody was aware existed. Similarly, the Wachowski’s “The Matrix” also happened in a world that was fabricated by technologically superior entities in order to control its inhabitants.
There was also “The Fifth Element,” from acclaimed French director Luc Besson. This is a Mike Giuffrida top choice in film since it was one of those movies that for me, had everything – from hard-hitting, explosive action to a galactic adventure to a quirky romance.
Whatever your fetish was in sci-fi, as a fan, you were completely satiated in the ‘90s.
Mike Giuffrida is a student based in Los Angeles. He’s hoping to break into the entertainment industry soon. For more entertainment-related posts, check out this page.
