I love war movies, especially those that are both well-directed and historically accurate. Films such as “Saving Private Ryan” and “Platoon” are high on my war movies list. However, a number of brilliant minds in Hollywood have produced and directed classics against the backdrop of war but aren’t exactly war movies.
On that note, here are my favorite unconventional movies on World War II.
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
An action-adventure directed by Steven Spielberg starring Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade” is a high-octane race that pits the Joneses and their friends against the Nazis. The prize? No less than THE Holy Grail.
Top Secret
As far as comedies go, “Top Secret” is way up the list. The film comes from the same team that brought us “Airplane!” and “The Naked Gun.” It follows the exploits of one Nick Rivers, an American singer touring Europe, who gets entangled in a nefarious Nazi plot and finds himself aligned with French resistance fighters. The film is a slapstick comedy at its best from start to end.
Casablanca
So many people forget that “Casablanca” is a war movie because it focuses more on the timeless romance between Rick and Ilsa. Very few films can hold a candle to this one as far as impact on filmmaking and the audience goes. There’s something for everyone in this film, which is why it stands the test of time.
