Route Six

Potterton to Goldsborough including Tadcaster

On reaching the A64, turn left and in about 150m take Mangrill Lane northwards.

Explorer 289. Leeds.

On reaching Jenny Sober Plantation take the path to the right into Bramham Park. Follow the one PRW through the park to Bowcliffe Hall. Cross the bridge over the A1(M) and turn left at the traffic lights. Take Bowcliffe Road to the village centre then Town Hill and Church Hill to reach the church. Go through the churchyard to Vicarage Lane and up the hill to the right.

Distance: 6.1 km.

Turn left and left again onto Windmill Road. In 200m Heygate Lane goes to the right. Follow this to SE442 443. Here a track goes eastwards to meet another at a t-junction. Go right and very shortly another path goes left and across the fields to Toulston. Continue through the hamlet until meeting Rudgate at a crossroads.

Distance: 3.8 km.

This is where the Tadcaster Loop returns.

Go left up to the A659 and cross over continuing along Rudgate.

On reaching the River Wharfe go left and follow Ebor Way to Boston Spa. Pass under the bridge and then turn off to the left and go up the hill to High Street.

Distance: 4.3 km.

Turn left and then left at Bridge Road to go down the hill and over the bridge into Thorpe Arch. Continue across The Green and up through The Village to just before The Pax pub a path goes off to the right. This goes to Thorpe Arch church. Go left here onto Church Causeway and up to Route 665 cycle track. Turn left onto that and carry on to Walton Gates and all the way to the edge of Wetherby. On reaching the A1(M) turn left just before the underpass.

Distance: 5.1 km.

Go southwards parallel to the motorway to Walton Road. Cross over and continue at the side of the A1(M) to the River Wharfe where the path swings right and under the motorway. After a short stretch alongside the river you reach a large car park and you are in Wetherby. Leave Wetherby on the B6164 until reaching SE 405 487 where Route 67 cycleway (Harland Way) leaves to the left. At the parting of the tracks, go to the right. Just beyond the last of the houses at SE 394 493 a footpath leaves to the right. Follow it to Ashdale Lane and turn right and go to Kirk Deighton. Reach the B6164 and turn left the Main Street up to the church. Just beyond the churchyard a footpath goes off to the right and down to the A168.

Distance: 5.9 km.

A footpath/cycle track follows the A168 northwards. Carry on along here passing beneath Ox Close Lane bridge to leave it at SE 409 527. Go along the bridleway past Black Stones to South Park. Reach the B6164 and turn right.

Distance; 4.4 km.

Just beyond the village hall a footpath leads through Ribston Park to join the Knaresborough Round. Continue to Goldsborough.

Distance: 4.1 km.

The Tadcaster Loop

From SE462 373 take the track northwards and join a farm road to take you past Newstead Farm and Lodge Farm. Turn right on reaching Chantry Lane and head eastwards passing White Quarry Farm to the junction with Old London Road.

Just after the junction Brant Lane leaves to the right to take you into Stutton.

Explorer 290.

Follow the road round to the right and pass the pub. Continue anticlockwise round the village until coming to Church Lane and there go right. At the end of the houses the road becomes a path and this takes you under the A64 and into Tadcaster. Weave through the first of the houses onto Stutton Road and on to the junction with Leeds Road. Go right here and pass through the traffic lights and past the brewery. Carry on to West Gate and there turn left. Go through the churchyard and out onto the river bank. Follow that northwards up to the viaduct.

Distance: 3.7 km.

Explorer 289 again.

Now on Ebor Way follow this along the River Wharfe to Newton Kyme. Pass the church and join Croft Lane en route to the A659. Cross that and follow the lane under the old railway bridge to the crossroads where you rejoin the main route at Rudgate.

Distance: 4.3 km.
