At the young age of 22, Aaron Johnson composed a "rock symphony,' which was recorded for his first album in 1978, performed by a three piece rock ensemble. Over time the home-recorded album (long before consumer grade recording technology) was lost with only remnants of the symphony recording barely surviving. With today's modern recording technology, a considerable effort was undertaken to see if the original recording could be saved with minor remixing and remastering efforts, and if the symphony could be transformed into viable orchestral arrangement, validating it as an legitimate orchestral composition.
Work began in early 2024 with valuable assistance from recording engineer Blair Ashby. The entire album was re-recorded as well, in what would be Aaron Johnson's final effort as a solo recording artist, thus completing his career by returning full circle to the where it began.
The original 1978 album featured fellow musicians David McKinnis (bass) and Ron Ardia (drums). Three months of rehearsals took place over the summer of that year, followed by the recording of the album. Studios and record pressings weren't widely available to the public at the time, so the album was released by making copies on 8-track and cassette, the popular formats of the time. The original reel-to-reel masters and copies barely survived the many decades that followed. Thanks to various restoration efforts over the years, the symphony recording managed to survive in pieces on various formats that were assembled for the 2025 album as a bonus track.
Some of the original songs would be rerecorded in a professional studio for Aaron's next epic album, "San Juan Stories" in 1979. New songs took their place on the 2025 album. The remaining songs were reconfigured into the bluegrass genre from the previous folk format, as Aaron had always wanted to do some bluegrass material.
Slated for an October 5, 2025 release, the "revisited" album features the original artwork as well as new art. In response to today's market, the album is available in a digital format. For the "old schoolers," a limited supplies of CDs will be available for a short time.
Blair and Aaron begin work on the symphony in October of 2024.
