FINALLY
THE FOURTH ALBUM BY AARON JOHNSON
Finally was released in July of 1984 and was well-received. Improvement in recording techniques during the period resulted in big drums, fat synthesizers and screaming guitars, although it wasn't quite yet the digital age. These conventions influenced Aaron's own sound choices, and a focused effort was made to "roll with the flow" in that direction, as Aaron found the trend agreeable to what he was wanting to achieve musically.
The album was not the original plan. Aaron had a desire to only record his song Silver Lake, (often touted as his best song), but as rehearsals progressed, it became apparent to him and bandmates Mike Kloepfer and Jim Bennett that their sound was appealing, and songs they were jamming on inspired them to compose more of their own and possibly play it all live.
Aaron composed some of his best songs during this time. His signature tune inspired by Ray Bradbury's novel, Something Wicked This Way Comes was brought to life in this creative period, along with Fashion Race which featured lyrics penned by his niece. Aaron and Mike composed Islands of the Heart, which inspired some of the most concept-challenging lyrics in Aaron's inventory of compositions. Aaron's opus The Visitor was composed in a six hour session on a single night, and endures today as one of his best epics.

As preparation for recording progressed, renditions of Rush and Black Sabbath songs begged for public exposure, so as a side project, the band put an ad in the local paper for a female lead vocalist. At the time, women fronting rock bands was just coming to the fore, but in the Denver metro area, this phenomenon was unheard-of. The band received just one fateful response from Malou Stirman, who happened to know all of the material by heart. It was meant to be! She would join the group to play Aaron's material and the cover tunes live.
The success was immediately apparent in the band's live appearances. Dubbed Voyager, the band was busy and easily dominated where ever they played. Voyager would continue for another year beyond Finally's release, and there was talk of doing a full album as a band, but Aaron's solo work had priority.
More material was needed to complete the album, during which time finances and life in general began to impede progress and it seemed like the album would never get done. Mike had recorded two compositions Aaron was glad to include on the record to barely achieve the required length, and to boldly display Mike's prowess as a composer, arranger and musician.

Mike's piece entitled Easter Island, was an instrumental. His other song would become the title track. Entitled Finally, it was born out of unique circumstances, as Mike had constructed the song utilizing pre-recorded drums off of an LP vinyl record, which predates drum machine availability by several years. Aaron crafted the lyrics reflecting the frustrations of getting the album completed. Mike played all instruments on both of these tunes.
Consequently Finally was recorded at several studios in order to get it done. The bulk of the music was recorded at Startsong Studios, where Aaron had recorded his double album San Juan Stories in 1979. Mike's songs were fashioned at home and completed at Daystar Studios. The stunning cover artwork was created by Mike as well.
Voyager's success was undeniable, but other obligations kept the band from continuing, so an album capturing the band's raw and thundering power was not recorded, which Aaron would regret. This dream would be realized many decades later, when the band would regroup and record a dynamic, orchestrated album in 2022. In 1999 all of Aaron's music was released on CD, and at that time, Silver Lake was incorporated into San Juan Stories. With the 2025 release of San Juan Stories, Finally was once again rendered a very short album. As a result, new material has been added.
An updated version of Something Wicked This Way Comes with a dramatic and creepy extended ending was developed for the 2026 release. Two new songs are also included: So Much For Paradise, and a love song inspired by the book of Ruth, I Belong to You. The album closes with an extended version of the title track, blending the original recording with a new arrangement to compliment it. Mike Kloepfer played all instruments on part one of the 10 minute epic. Aaron played all parts in the electronica-dance mix inspired version in part two, created in 2026, which features iconic themes from his career and his time with the Stiffwater band. My car then stalled, I was forced to walk, regretting my shortcut attempt...When suddenly I sensed I wasn't alone...
The desolation seemed to breathe with the presence of new life.Drawn toward a light through the trees a wondrous sight filled my eyes.
I could not believe what I beheld. Landed in a clearing, a craft from another world!Mysteriously compelled, I'm drawn within its shell...to my delight.
The hatchway closes! I'm trapped! There's no escape!Controls light up, engines engage...carried away!I watch my blue world shrink and vanish into space, and I am gone!
Lost forever on a journey, destination unknown,I'm overwhelmed by grief and by terror!Carried through the cosmos at a speed that transcends time,Galaxies flash by in a blinding blur.

THE AJP PROJECT
The AJP Project is an ongoing effort to release all of Aaron Johnson's music in today's digital age while simultaneously educating supporters past and future on the issues of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and how it is fundamentally changing the music industry, and to foster support of local musicians and live music. The project's charter encourages folks to put down their phones, get away from their screens and listen to music again, and do so with friends and loved ones. This practice, dating back to the 1970s, is a great way to relax, it's good for you and strengthens social bonds through a shared experience of taking a musical journey together. Try it!
