Plastic bags, especially grocery bags, are the scourge of the earth. Our chapter periodically holds campaigns to convince the public that they should consider using tote bags for their groceries rather than plastics. We have given away close to 2,000 bags such as the one illustrated on the left.
This bag contains our chapter logo, and the wording: "Eliminate Plastic Bags, Use Recyclable Totes, "
Other series of bags have contained wording such as: REUSE - RECYCLE - REPURPOSE
Some dedicated members periodically conduct road trash pick-ups. We have two designated sites in Talbot County: Oxford Road from Trippe Creek to Almshouse Road and Money Make Road from Beaver Dam to Chancelors' Point Road. Each site is roughly 1 to 1.5 miles long and we try to do the pick-ups at least 4 times per year.
We are always looking for new volunteers to help with this activity. Think of it as a short hike with some bending exercises.
It is now a bit of chapter history, but notewothy. Prior to the Towns of easton and St.Michael's starting collection programs, our chapter operated a collection program for newspapers and aluminum cans. We did this for roughly 30 years and during 2020 - 2021 the program became labor intensive and quantities went down. Also, during COVID too many people skipped trips to the dump and put trash into our collection bins. The straw breaker was 21 paint caans, multiple sheets of styrofome packing, and 3 bags of household trash.
For all the years we did the collections, we sold the paper and cans to recyclers and we used the income to provide scholarships to local high school students. Typiclly, we were able to provide four $1,000 scholarships each year.
