Activity 1

Identify samples from around your home or environment that would be good samples to study under the microscope. Samples should be transparent or semi-transparent if we are going to view the sample with light through the object. A solid sample will need to be illuminated from the top or side.

Good transparent samples

Insect parts like wings or

Feathers, hair, or fur

Thin leaves or flower pedals

Dust or lint

Good semi transparent samples

Paper or fabric

Foods like jelly or mustard

Possible opaque samples

Rocks, wood or metals with texture

Computer components

Small mechanical components like the inside of a watch

A magnified parsley leaf

After you select a few samples, try to image and describe what they may look like under the microscope.
