What does it mean to be a principled practitioner? You must be involved and aware of the academic contributions to your field of work; always working to introduce new ideas into your methods. When being a principled practitioner you must question the norms and be aware of the different cultural perspectives of your students.
Listening Map
In this assignment we were asked to create an interactive listening map. The goal of this map was to provide a doorway to certain musical concepts. This provided an opportunity for students to interact with something specific in the music, whether it be pitch, rhythm, etc. The song I chose was Plantasia, and the doorway in was melody. I used different types of plants to indicate rhythm, and the direction (up, down), indicated pitch. Originally my map was black and white, but after learning that the lack of color would be a bit dry for students I added a little color.
Topics From The Field
In this group assignment we were sent out to find a music journal publication. The purpose of this exercise was to be aware of modern developments in the world of music education. This is crucial for being up to date with different theories and methods of educating children.
It is important to stay up to date with modern practices and contemporary methods in regards to educating children, otherwise you become stagnant in your work, and stagnation is the death of inspiration. We as educators must be willing to grow and learn new things in order to better the lives of our students, and to make lasting and positive changes in our schools.
For all these reasons listed above, I found the Principled Practitioner Pillar to best suit this assignment.
