Innovative Leader

What does it mean to be an innovative leader? An innovative leader is in the forefront of developments in the music teaching community. To achieve this, one must be aware of current developments and methods in the field. An innovative leader leader talks with their peers and is always learning and improving themselves and their methods. On top of this, an innovative leader has a vision for the classroom.

In this assignment we were tasked with teaching a multicultural song. The goal of this assignment was to present the student with a song from a different culture and break it down in a simple manner. The goal was to have the student develop independent mastery of the song. This step by step approach makes it easy for the student to learn the song.

In this group assignment we had to interview a faculty member, and come up with four categories of questions to ask him. I had the privilege of conducting the interview and our conversation went well over an hour. I really enjoyed this assignment because it presented us with the opportunity to pick the brain of a seasoned professional. I think this assignment reflects the Innovative Leader pillar because this pillar is centered around communicating with others who work in your field. Talking with Dr. Schaller inspired me and gave me new ideas on how to teach my students, and create a positive outcome in my classroom. For these reasons I am including this assignment under the Innovative Leader Pillar.
