MURAKAMI REVIEW—the peer-reviewed, open-access journal published by the Murakami Haruki Research Forum—welcomes submissions for its forthcoming English-language issue. The journal is hosted on the Forum’s official website, archived in Kyoto University’s academic
repository KURENAI, and indexed through CiNii.
The inaugural English-language edition of Murakami Review will focus on the theme “Murakami and Film.” We welcome scholarly essays and reviews that engage with this topic from a wide range of critical perspectives. Scholars interested in contributing a review are asked
to contact the editor in advance.
The submission deadline is June 30. Essays that successfully pass peer review will be published in late 2026.
Inquiries regarding the English editions of Murakami Review should be directed to the Murakami Review Editorial Board via Dr. Jonathan Dil, Department of Foreign Languages and Liberal Arts, Faculty of Science and Technology, Keio University.
Email: dil☆keio.jp
The editorial office of Murakam Review is located in Dr. Motohiro Kojima’s office, Graduate School of Human and Environmental Studies, Kyoto University.
Submission Guidelines for English Essays and Reviews
1. Deadline
Deadlines for English editions will be announced for each issue.
2. Originality
In principle, submissions must be unpublished and not under review elsewhere. English translations of essays originally published in Japanese or other languages will be considered with the proper permissions.
3. Use of AI Translation
One of the goals of the Murakami Forum and Murakami Review is to foster dialogue between Murakami scholars working in different languages. We recognize AI as a powerful tool in this endeavor and welcome the use of AI translation by scholars working in other languages who wish to share their work with English-speaking audiences. While the editorial board cannot provide English translations of essays, we are happy to proofread and edit AI-assisted translations of essays originally written in Japanese or other languages to ensure they meet the publication standards of the Murakami Review. A short acknowledgement should be included in the footnotes when AI translation has been used.
4. Length
Essays: 5,000–11,000 words (including notes and references)
Book Reviews: 1,000–3,000 words
5. Formatting and Style
Use the latest edition of MLA Style for citations and references.
Use Hepburn romanization for Japanese terms and names.
Follow Japanese name order (family name first, given name second).
Use Times New Roman, 12-point font, double-spaced.
Footnotes are permitted. Note numbers in the text should be indicated as superscripts (e.g., ¹, ²).
Include a reference list at the end, containing only works cited or discussed in the text.
6. Figures and Images
If you wish to include tables, figures, or photographs, please obtain prior permission from the copyright holder and submit the corresponding digital files separately.
7. Abstract
Include an English abstract of approximately 150 words.
8. File Format and Submission
Save your manuscript as a Word (.doc or .docx) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) file and send it by email to dil☆keio.jp. Please use the subject line “MURAKAMI REVIEW Submission.”
9. Review Process
The editorial board will make the final decision on acceptance after review and discussion. The board may request revisions prior to publication.
10. Proofreading
Authors will have one opportunity to proofread their work. Only typographical or factual corrections are permitted at this stage; substantive changes to content are not allowed.
11. Copyright
By submitting to MURAKAMI REVIEW, authors grant the Murakami Haruki Research Forum permission to exercise the rights of reproduction (including digitization) and public transmission (including online publication) of their work.
