Metagenomics Bootcamp

Next-generation sequencing (NGS) is a rapidly growing technology (Morova and Mara, 2008). NGS analysis exists at the intersection between biology, computer science, and the growing demand for analysts capable of working with big data. This 3-week metagenomics boot camp course is led by Dr. Jessica Lee Joyner, who is an expert in metagenomics analysis and has been leading classes in this type of analysis for the AREM (Authentic Research Experience in Microbiology) program. Dr. Joyner will introduce students to both the most common and accessible form of next-generation sequencing - bacterial community targeted metagenomics - and to big data analysis.

Bacterial communities or microbiomes are being investigated for potential solutions and applications in various fields, including medicine, public health, urban planing, and environmental science. Big data projects in metagenomics require advanced data organization and supercomputing for the analysis, and contextualized training for the NGS results interpretation. Students will gain an understanding of the purpose and design of metagenomics projects and will also gain competency in analyzing data. These technical skills will create a solid foundation for students in big data science and NGS analysis.

4) Develop competency in python and shell scripting for the purpose of metagenomics sequence analysis
