It feels like an eternity since I've done one of these Collectors' Corner articles, back when I was making regularly weekly runs to Toys R' Us out of town and sharing what I would snag from my hauls there and across several other stories.
Several years have passed and times have changed. Money is tighter for a lot of people, married, single, or whatever your current situation is. The pandemic has affected collecting too. Prices have gone through the roof with these companies blaming inflation and the struggling economy, but I feel like we as collectors should be getting more bang for our buck in terms of what we are paying for these figures and collectibles that easily retail anywhere from $22.99 to $64.99 and higher for premium and deluxe figures. You will easily pay double, triple, and quadruple that on the second hand market by purchasing online from scalpers.
A question I get a lot from my peers, followers, friends, and colleagues is "How can you afford to get all of those figures, man? They are expensive as hell."
The more I thought about my answer(s) to those individuals concerning it to merely luck or a single sale here or there, I thought I should just detail my favorite retailers where I shop at regularly. Sure, your experience(s) may vary but I see no harm in sharing this information.
Target has become my go-to store in terms of hunting figure deals almost weekly. While I think their online service is utter dog-shit (both shipped me damaged figures AND mistakenly charged me for stuff I never purchased), their in-store deals are incredible if you can capitalize on them in person.
If you have an account with them, you can bank in even more discounts with them from what I have heard too, but I'm content as is with what I have been doing without one. Ever since the tale end of 2022, Target has been slapping those yellow clearance stickers on just about everything in the toy sections, ranging from those Avatar: The Way of Water and Lightyear movie tie-in toys to several waves of Marvel Legends, WWE Elites, Masters of the Universe Masterverse & Classics, Power Rangers Lightning Collection, and DC Multiverse action figures.
Hell, there was one random Target in my area that marked down copies of Mass Effect Legendary Edition (PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X) down to less than $5 and TMNT Cowabunga Collection (PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch) to $8, but both were completely sold out to my utter disappointment. I don't know if any Target stores are doing this now since most are remodeling their store layout to their modern layout in my area(s) but they used to have a corner near electronics and the collectibles where they would pile up all of the electronics, books, and video games on clearance, but I have yet to see that anymore in the past year or so. If they are still doing that in your area(s), let me know in a comment or DM on social media as I would love to know. The only devoted clearance sections here are just randomly stacked up boxes of assorted toys at the e
Marvel Legends (Infinity Ultron BAF wave) Action Figures (Disney+ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, The Falcon & The Winter Soldier Sharon Carter, Moon Knight Mr. Knight, Moon Knight Moon Knight, Hawkeye Hawkeye/Clint Barton, Hawkeye Kate Bishop). Clearance pricing as low as $6.99 to $11.99 depending on the location. Your experience may vary, but I have never seen a Moon Knight, Mr. Knight, nor a Sharon Carter in the wild in the Targets in my area.
Marvel Legends (Black Panther: Wakanda Forever movie / Attuma BAF wave) Action Figures. Clearance pricing as low as $6.99 to $17.99 depending on the location. Your experience may vary, but I saw more of the movie's cast than Black Panther (comicbook version) and Hatut Zeraze if you were looking for those two particular figures.
Marvel Legends (Khonshu BAF wave) Action Figures (Disney+ Loki He Who Remains, Marvel's What If...? Howard the Duck, Marvel's What If...? Red Skull, Marvel's What If...? Zombie Scarlet Witch, Loki Classic Loki, WandaVision Agent Jimmy Woo). Clearance pricing as low as $6.99 to $17.99 depending on the location. I have seen tons of these just peg warming various Target retailers, but I have never seen an Agent Jimmy Woo in the wild.
Masters of the Universe Masterverse (Deluxe) Action Figures (Masters of the Universe: Revelation King Grayskull, She-Ra: Princess of Power She-Ra, New Eternia Beast Man, She-Ra: Princess of Power Hordak, Masters of the Universe: Revelation Savage He-Man and Orko 2-Pack, etc.). Clearance markdowns since end of 2022 holidays, up to 70-80% off retail price. Some of these deals are still ongoing regularly depending on what Target you go to, so it doesn't hurt to check out their stock of Masterverse figures. Same goes for the MOTU Retros too.
WWE Legends Elite Collection Series 16 Figures (Rey Mysterio, Farooq, Bradshaw, Mighty Molly). Clearance pricing as low as $6.49 each, but it has been marked back to it's normal pricing of $22.99 (in some areas but not all) as of this posting.
WWE Top Picks Elite Collection Seth Rollins Action Figure. Clearance pricing as low as $11.49-16.99 each, but it has been marked back to it's normal pricing of $22.99 as of this posting.
WWE Legends Elite Series 17 Figures (AJ Styles and Bradshaw specifically). Clearance pricing as low as $11 each, but it has been marked back to it's normal pricing of $22.99 as of this posting.
When I was younger, Roses used to be one of the most frequented stores in my hometown. Y'know back when Service Merchandise was still a thing in malls and bigger cities. Roses went away for like a decade or more and by the time I came back home after college that it was back in full swing in my hometown with the main Roses retail store built within the local mall (ironically in the same location that Service Merchandise existed back in the early '90s) and a Roses Express store up the road.
Outside of snacks and usual goods that you could typically get cheaper here than Dollar Tree, Dollar General, K-Mart, and occasionally Wal-Mart, Roses tends to have some pop culture T-Shirts (some video game, vintage cartoons, and occasional WWE related) and occasional toys and collectibles, mostly stuff that's overstocked from other retailers, such as Target and Wal-Mart. Then there's other stuff they get on a whim out of nowhere.
GameForged Tomb Raider (Reboot) statue.
WWE Championship Showdown Deluxe Role Play Title with 4 Swappable Side Plates.
The New Day "Booty-O's" 3-Pack WWE Elite
When Roses first reopened in my state, I was able to find all kinds of crazy shit in there, such as the GameForged Tomb Raider (Reboot) statue ($5) and The New Day WWE Elite "Booty-O's" 3-Figure Battle Pack ($10). I resold that statue for close to $100 during the pandemic while I was downsizing my collection a bit.
I haven't seen stuff like that in years, but the closest thing to that I saw during the pandemic years were WWE Championship Showdown Deluxe Role Play Title with 4 Swappable Side Plates ($30).
DC Multiverse (McFarlane Toys) The Suicide Squad (Movie) Figures (Everyone but both versions of Bloodsport regularly) $15 each. I know it's not DC related, but I've seen a Spawn figure or two from McFarlane Toys among those figures too.
DC Multiverse (McFarlane Toys) Gotham Knights (video game) Figures (TONS of Robin and Batgirl - never seen a Nightwing nor Red Hood to date) $15 each.
WWE Elite Series 92 (Mostly Scarlett, Charlotte Flair, Ric Flair, Adam Cole, "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt with Rey Mysterio being a rare find) $10 each.
Masters of the Universe (Battle Armor He-Man) Classics Action Figure. $10-15 each, depends on location but they don't keep many of these period.
Power Rangers Lightning Collection Action Figures (Random finds, mostly Phantom Ranger, Green Dino Charge Ranger, and Pink Ranger Slayer. Your experience may vary.) $10-15 each. They ocassionally may have individual Zords for sale too.
Marvel Legends Action Figures (Random assortment). A lot of collectors have gotten savvy about these showing up here, so don't count on seeing a lot of them. They are regularly priced at $9.99 each.
Fortnite Action Figures (I'm not familiar with those characters nor toys in the least but they have them frequently). $10 (or lower) each.
Transformers Figures (I've seen everything from Power of the Primes, Combiner Wars, War For Cybertron - Kingdom, to Cyberverse lines currently throughout the years. Ross has become pretty infamous in terms of getting Transformers for the cheap.) $19.99 each. FYI they started to discount some of WFC - Kingdom ones even lower locally since they weren't selling well at all, so now is the time to pick up that Rhinox, Tigertron, Waspinator, Airazor, Blackarachnia, etc. that you may have been holding out on like me.
If you need frames for posters, theirs go for $4.99 each for 18x24" size.
I have to credit my father for tipping me off about Burlington to be honest. That was one store I really didn't go into much outside of occasionally buying dress shirts or shoes for wearing to formal events. Now I started making an effort to at least check out one of their stores every time I come across one in my travels. Not a single one carries the same stock and it's often like playing the lottery in terms of finding something worth a damn or not.
I'm still salty AF that I didn't pick this up during the holidays. I haven't seen one in another Burlington since either.
Even if you don't collect toys, Burlington tends to have nerd culture apparel and clothing on the cheap too, rivaling prices for T-shirts and other clothing to represent your favorite cartoons, anime, etc. as Five Below or Wal-Mart. They have tons of accessories for electronics at a reasonable price too, especially if you're looking for accessories for your Nintendo Switch (travel cases, controllers, screen protectors, etc.) and sometimes an occasional controller or two for Xbox and PlayStation owners. Keep in mind, those controllers are typically 3rd party stuff, so you get what you pay for. As for the Switch travel cases and the like, those are typically first party stuff with the official Nintendo branding on them. I'm still kicking myself for NOT buying the Metroid Dread case I saw back during the holidays all because I didn't feel like standing in the line that was wrapped all around the store that evening. I haven't seen it in another Burlington store since and I refuse to pay the outlandish prices for it online.
Power Rangers Retro (VHS Tape Packaging) Zord Action Figures (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Dino Megazord, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Thunder Megazord, Power Rangers Ninja Storm Ninjakon (Red Ninjor), and Power Rangers Lost Galaxy Galaxy Megazord). Spotted the entire wave of 4 figures, running at $9.99 each, depends on location though.
Power Rangers Lightning Collection Action Figures (Random assortment, but mainly have seen Green Dino Charge Ranger, Phantom Ranger, Red and Green A-Squad SPD Rangers). $9.99 to $14.99 (and lower) each, depends on location.
Marvel Legends Action Figures (Mostly The Hand ninjas from the Stilt-Man BAF wave, so don't confuse this singular figure with the Army Builders on Hasbro Pulse). I've seen TONS of these stacked up in one local Burlington, but never again in any of the others nearby. They were running at $9.99 each.
Avatar: The Last Airbender (3.75 scale, McFarlane Toys) Figures (Aang, Katara, Sokka, and Zuko) $5 (or lower) each. I got Aang for $1.29 on clearance in one store.
All Elite Wrestling Unrivaled Series 5, 7, & 8 Action Figures (Mostly Jon Moxley, "Lionheart" Chris Jericho, "Hangman" Adam Page, Jungle Boy, Nick Jackson, Matt Jackson, Dax Harwood, Cash Wheeler, Nyla Rose, Lance Archer, and Luchasaurus) $5.99 each.
GI Joe Classified Action Figures. $7.99 each, depends on location but I have only seen TONS of Roadblock on shelves.
Transformers Cyberverse Figures (Random Assortment). $5-15 each, depending on the size of the Transformer. That's where I got my Cyberverse Windblade from actually.
Various character mini-figures (such as Bandai Chibi Masters Sailor Moon characters), but these are VERY rare to come across.
When Ollie's first came to my area before the pandemic, it was my go-to spot for most of my graphic novels (over going to the local comic book shops), occasional toys, and snacks for breakfast or while on my work grind due to their reasonable prices. Over the years that followed, more and more people have become hip to Ollie's carrying collectibles occasionally, so it's getting harder to nab this stuff on a bargain, even though I will still occasionally grab a few graphic novels, compendiums, and art books for reasonable prices.
Truth be told, I got one of my Jim Lee/Chris Claremont era Uncanny X-Men Omnibuses from there for $35+ that normally retails over $100+ online. I could've gotten the Inferno one too, but it was gone by the time I went back after work the following day. When they first opened the one in the small town where I commute to for work everyday, they had most of the line of Retro X-Men Marvel Legends for $9.99. Those were snatched up VERY fast, but I managed to get an Iceman and Cyclops at the time.
So yeah, you never know what you're going to find when you go into an Ollie's. Just fair warning that some of their retailers are VERY organized and you can easily find stuff, while others it's like finding a needle in a haystack from how cluttered their stock is on the shelves. Even their company slogan says that if you find something good in Ollie's, there's NO guarantee that it's going to be there again the next time you come there so it's always wise to jump on that deal when you see it.
Just a small sample of stuff that I've found on a whim in Ollie's over the years.
From my understanding, they receive a lot of stock that is regarded as overflow inventory from other bigger retail chains that didn't sell or merely wasting space that is needed for newer stock. I have noticed that Ollie's has been gradually raising their prices throughout the pandemic too as a lot of collectors have gotten hip to what they have been getting in and have been tipping others off on social media. The days of grabbing this stuff and trying to flip it for a profit on Amazon and eBay are pretty much dead since just about everyone is trying to make a hustle that way when it comes to these collectibles - myself included. That's why I'm VERY hesitant to try to resell stuff I end up seeing in Ollie's as I'm sure most will have these same items as well, unless you're on the other side of the country where Ollie's stores are pretty scarce or live internationally where you can't get these deals in your region.
Marvel Legends (Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness Movie Rintrah BAF wave) Figures (Every figure in the entire wave) $9.99 each.
Marvel Legends (Black Widow Movie wave) Deluxe Figures (Black Widow, Red Guardian & Melina, Walmart Exclusive Comics Black Widow) $14.99 each.
Marvel Legends Infinity Saga & Marvel Studios: The First Ten Years (Avengers: Infinity War Captain America/Steve Rogers, Guardians of the Galaxy Ronan the Accuser) $9.99 each.
Misc. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Captain Marvel, and other assorted Marvel Studios, DC Studios (Shazam!, Black Adam, etc.), various DC Comics, and Star Wars related merchandise at various prices. You'll never know what you might find on a whim.
Star War Black Series (normal and deluxe figures), Vintage Collection, and Retro (3.75 size) Figures (I only recently started seeing these during my most recent trip, with mostly The Mandalorian, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and The Book of Boba Fett miscellaneous figures showing up on pegs.) $4.99 to 9.99 each.
G.I. Joe Classified Figures (I only recently started seeing this during my most recent trip and they only had a few boxes full of Lady Jaye that they were set to start filling pegs with.) $9.99 each.
Power Rangers Lightning Collection Action Figures (Random finds, mostly miscellaneous Mighty Morphin Power Rangers villains, such as Sphinxor, Eye Guy, and singular Tengu Warriors. Your experience may vary.) $15-20 each.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Auto Morphin Action Figures (Random assortment). $5.99 each. I personally found a Ninjor just the day before this posting, so your experience may vary.
Transformers: War For Cybertron - Kingdom Voyager Class Figures (Perceptor, Blaster, DinoBot, Rhinox and Tigertron. Sadly, I have seen the latter two the most out of any of those on a regular basis.) $19.99 each.
WWE Elite Series & Basic Action Figures (It's a coin toss on what line it is. I've seen a lot of WrestleMania-themed waves, Legends, Elites, and even Basics thorough multiple locations) $10-15 each.
Masters of the Universe Masterverse (MOTU: Revelation & Origins) Action Figure. $10-25 each, depends on location but I have mostly spotted tons of He-Man, Battle Cat (classic), Panthor (classic), and various classic vehicles.
Ollie's has poster frames too, but theirs are a little more expensive for the same quality and different sizes other than 18x24", running from $4.99 to $9.99. Still beats paying $20+ at Walmart or elsewhere.
Walmart is generally a crapshoot in most cases as not every store is going to have the same stuff, nor will they honor the same prices and deals and what not. If you're not using the Wal-Mart app (even if you don't have a Wal-Mart+ account), you are missing out by not using the app's built-in price checker. There's tons of Reddit posts and YouTube videos about it, but Wal-Mart is notoriously bad about pricing their stock with the wrong prices on shelves. That's why it's a great practice to go around their stores and start scanning items that you want, even if it's not on clearance. If you're lucky, it will show up in the app at a highly discounted price than what it is listed on the shelf for. In a lot of cases, the price listed in the app tends to be higher than what is on shelf listed, but that's okay as the app is comparing with the other stock found online, so you know whether or not you're getting a deal in-person/in-store. In other rare cases, you might find a deal for something that's not even on clearance and get it at a 70-90% discount.
I've heard stories about people getting smart TVs at a large discount for less than $100 but never encountered anything like that myself. The craziest deals I ran into was running some clearanced games through the Wal-Mart app for them to ring up to $0.01 to a $1 each that I have absolutely no shame in admitting that I flipped to sell on eBay immediately after.
A lot of Wal-Mart stores tend to have a dedicated clearance section, so it doesn't hurt to comb through that aisle and compare to the normal priced stuff you want. You'll never know if you might find something that they missed and can grab at a bargain. Wal-Mart in general is notoriously bad at pricing their items properly. I was finding deals left and right while shopping for Christmas last year. Right now is a great time to grab some deals too while they are still trying to get rid of leftover stock from the holidays, especially if you have kids to shop for.
Several Wal-Mart stores are trying to get rid of their stock of Encanto, Lightyear, Black Adam, Avatar: The Way of Water, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and other various merchandise that has been hogging shelf space for the past year and hasn't budged an inch in terms of getting people to take that stuff off their hands at full price. If you're lucky, you might be able to snag a few DC Multiverse, Power Rangers Lightning Collection, and/or Marvel Legends at a fair price, but don't hold your breath as I haven't seen many get priced lower than $2-5 lower than their normal retail prices.
Random deal I stumbled across in Wal-Mart tonight (4/13/23) where they were clearancing out a ton of physical PS4, PS5, XB1, XBX, and Switch games.
Much like Wal-Mart, it's a similar gamble as Walgreens rarely carries the same stock from store to store, especially when you're hunting for those retailer exclusive Marvel Legends figures that people have been desperately hunting down last year (Baron Zemo, Quasar, Nova, Binary, Jigsaw, and currently Sentry). To be honest, I've seen countless amounts of Sentry warming shelves since next to no one wants that guy after most people jumped on that holiday deal for Zemo, Binary, Quasar, Nova, and Jigsaw before Christmas last year. I managed to snag Zemo and Binary, but missed out on Jigsaw and Nova unfortunately. I don't want Quasar unless it's the female version from the comics personally.
Any collector will tell you to stay FAR, FAR away from trying to order anything through Walgreens online as they will send you your order confirmations one minute then completely cancel your entire order on a whim without warning.
Walgreens was clearancing out a few Transformers Generations figures too, namely Prowl, Jetfire, and Shockwave. I got two Jetfires and a Prowl, since I'm going to gift one Jetfire to my older brother since he's the bigger Transformers fan than me.
Their markdowns on other toys is best described as sheer randomness at its finest. I did manage to get a Marvel Avengers Zoteki Thanos to put on my desk for less than $2 on clearance. Thanos by himself looked cool enough to me. I don't even want the rest of the figures to complete the diorama scene. Walgreens tends to sell some McFarlane Toys and other miscellaneous pop culture and nerd culture figures too, such as The Rocketeer, John Wick, Bruce Lee, The Walking Dead, Dragon Ball Super, and even Kingdom Hearts too. That was were I got my set of Kingdom Hearts figures that I currently have listed on eBay from too. I missed the boat on those Rocketeer, John Wick, and Bruce Lee figures.
A general rule of thumb when checking out Walgreens is to walk down the toy aisle and see if they have those bright orange clearance/markdown tags on anything of interest. If they do, you better snag it then and there since there's no guarantee if that sale is going to stick after a week.
Flea markets tend to have any and all types of sellers with collectibles coming in a range of conditions. In that regard, I highly suggest you inspect anything that you are even remotely interested in buying thoroughly before putting your money down as nine times out of ten, you're not getting your money back after you walk away from that table/vendor. That being said, having a pokerface and being able to haggle is key. (Laughs) If it's one of those vendors who has a table out there every week in the same spot, then they aren't going budge at all on their prices, so don't even bother. You can tell those vendors apart easily as they tend to sell their stuff at retail value (more or less) and expect you to buy their stuff instead of walking into the very same store they got it from.
Some sellers/vendors at flea markets, especially when they are about to leave/close will be willing to cut any sort of deal(s) with you just to unload the amount of inventory that they have to take back home.
Some of you might laugh at this, but I was at the local flea market with my father one weekend and there was this one seller who was trying to unload his entire truck and backseat full of Playboy magazines to us - ranging from vintage to current. For one, I knew I wouldn't have anywhere to store any of that sensibly and secondly, it would be hard enough to resell online as the conditions of those magazines ranged from god awful to brand new. There was absolutely no idea the amount of work involved to get anything back from that outside of bragging rights. So yeah, you will encounter vendors who are just flat out desperate to unload all of their stuff to make anything off of it. Use that information to your advantage if it's something that you really want. I've gotten a ton of vintage comics in that manner too from people who just want to get stuff like that out of their houses.
Another similar situation like that I ran into was an older woman wanting to sell me a vintage Barbie airplane with the doll case/carrying case and she was willing to throw in her collection of The Wizard of Oz Barbie Dolls too. You'd think it was a good deal, but the plane was in horrid condition and missing parts, despite coming with the stewardess. My oldest sister who collects Barbie dolls said it wouldn't been worth it anyway. Double goes for the carrying case that had holes in it and the dolls inside looked like they were dragged through the mud. The Wizard of Oz dolls were all in horrible condition save for Dorothy but the seller refused to let them all go individually. So yeah, it was a no from me, dawg.
I hate to say it, but a lot of these places are crooks who are typically after your money. And they are mostly solely responsible for snatching up most of stock in your favorite stores when it comes to collectibles. Everyone knows that one guy in your circle of collectors who is the first one standing outside of Target, Wal-Mart, etc. whenever they open just to be the first one to have first dibs at whenever the new inventory comes in before anyone else. They would buy 5-10 of everything and leave next to nothing for anyone else to pick up for their collections. If that person isn't listing that stuff straight to Amazon, eBay, etc., they are reselling it back to one of these vendors, who will more likely sell it in their own stores for double it's retail price, especially if it's a rare or limited edition/variant collectible.
At conventions, be prepared to pay top dollar in most cases. It's not all hope is lost in terms of getting deals. It's just that you have to hunt high and low for them as it's going to be really tempting to throw all of your money down the drain at those events.
Card shops are notoriously expensive since most people who buy anime or import stuff from those vendors typically don't know any better that there's far cheaper options and alternatives online. Keep in mind that stores like that tend to take advantage of customers who don't shop elsewhere. I personally tend to go into those shops every now and then to check out their Gundam model kits (GunPla to the younger kids nowadays) and laugh at the ridiculous prices they are charging for them in-person.
I can't knock on all of these guys though as a lot of the ones I know personally who run them are actually some really good, down to earth people who are just trying to make ends meet. My weekend routine in college used to be visiting the local comic book shop and picking up a ton of comics from the $1 bins and thumbing through their loose figures. Some of these vendors have similar setups like that for bargain hunters.
I personally call these three stores the "trinity" of sorts, in terms of you have absolutely NO idea what you will find in these stores when you find one. I guess you could throw Bealls Outlet (formerly Burke's Outlet here in the Carolinas) in there too to a lesser extent, but these three stores can have anything from board games, video game accessories, collectibles, or even your favorite sports team merchandise on the cheap at any given time.
There was a time before COVID where I would frequent CitiTrends merely for finding Marvel Legends on the cheap. I found that Luke Cage & Claire Temple 2-Pack while the show was still fresh on everyone's minds on Netflix for less than $5, years before it started popping up left and right in Ollie's and almost everywhere else on clearance. Recently, I saw that Spider-Man: Homecoming (Vulture's wings BAF) Marvel Legends wave in there but it was none of the figures that I actually wanted. I saw a few of them carrying miscellaneous Transformers too, ranging from the Power of the Primes line to the recent War for Cybertron - Kingdom line. Another store had a big multi-figure bundle of all of the Power Rangers from Beast Morphers along with the main villain in that set for $30. If that was one of my favorite seasons, I wouldn't have hesitated on buying that, but unfortunately, it wasn't so I passed on it. CitiTrends still has a lot of that Shang-Chi, Eternals, and Black Panther merchandise too if there's any interest. I can't knock them for that when I got a Black Panther throw blanket for $2 to toss on the end of my bed.
Back in the day, Marshalls used to be the go-to store for your knock-off third party PlayStation and PlayStation 2 controllers, but they seem to never have any of that stuff nowadays. You might find a few Nintendo Switch accessories and maybe one of those character controllers here and there, but nothing like PlayStation and Xbox controllers anymore. If you collect Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog related merchandise, they have a lot of the toys cheaper than other retailers since they have been warming their shelves for much longer than those related films came out. They also carry assorted Funko Pops too for those who collect those at a reasonable price.
T.J. Maxx carries mostly the same stuff as Marshalls at the same prices, more or less. It just depends on your location. If you're looking for multi-tier stands to display your figures on, both stores carry those in their spice rack sections for about $4.99 to $9.99 depending on what you're looking for your displays.
I know a LOT of people who act like shopping in Goodwill is beneath them, but I'm going to drop some knowledge on you folks that you're not aware about.
A TON of collectors and people who don't even collect stuff period shop in Goodwill nowadays, especially in the years prior to the pandemic where you would find brand new shit in there. Before COVID hit, I would make monthly trips to the Computer Works in my state just to pick up computer parts, DVDs (mostly TV show boxsets and volumes for a $1 each in a lot of cases; hence how I got most of Batman TAS, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Angel all on DVD), CDs, Blu-Rays, video game consoles and video games to either keep or resell on eBay or at the flea market every couple of months. So many people have gotten hip to this that it's a fruitless endeavor now as I have witnessed people fighting over new shoes and clothes in the other Goodwill stores (the ones that have the bins where you have to fish through the inventory that just arrived). As a precaution, I suggest you wash your hands afterwards and/or bring gloves for your own safety.
FYI 95% of the mini-figures on my desk or on my bookshelf are from Goodwill or flea market finds that were less than a $1 for tons of them in mint condition.
It made me sad to see the Computer Works in my state close their doors to the public and strictly limit their stock to scattered sales and auctions on eBay where they really hike up those prices.
The game consoles that I have found over the years in Goodwill:
PlayStation (PSX)
Original models are pretty common. The ones with the expansion bay intact for easy modding are slightly rare. I have one that has a built-in monitor for gaming on the go.
PlayStation 2 (PS2)
Mostly the bulky original models, but have buyers beware on those as they could be the ones that need the laser replaced.
PlayStation 3 (PS3)
I saw one ONCE but someone else snagged it off the shelf before I could.
GameBoy Color (GBC)
Most of the time, it will have a game already in it as an added bonus.
Xbox (original)
Heavy as a brick, but still a solid console. I still have two in storage that I need to do something with, either mod for dumping some emulators onto or sell the other.
Xbox 360 (X360)
Much like the PS2s, buyers beware. These could be RRoD (Red Ring of Doom) models. Some people still buy these just to repair themselves. I sold all of the ones I had save for one (for parts for my current X360) since I didn't feel like going through the hassle of repairing the RRoD issue.
Nintendo Wii
I have several of these. Sold several over the years and kept 3 for modding purposes. The games for it are generally cheaper than what you will pay for downloading on a Switch these days and it's easy as hell to mod to run emulators. The only thing you might still pay a ton of money for outside of Nintendo's first party games are the accessories, cords, cables, sensor bar (a must for it BTW), and Wiimotes but if you're lucky, Goodwill will have this thing all bundled up together for less than $5-10.
Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) & Super Nintendo (SNES)
I've seen a few of those in passing but never were able to snag one before anyone else picked them up. Plus I never saw the point when they would rarely have the cartridges for them.
There was one Goodwill I used to frequent that regularly got video games (vintage and current) for reasonable prices with all of the packaging intact. I'm sure regular readers of this blog remember me mentioning my trips there in the past. Then another that would randomly put stacks of PSX or other video games taped together for less than $5.
I personally think the days of going to Best Buy for all of your electronics needs are all but gone, but to Best Buy's credit, their online deals have been amazing over the past two years. They will regularly markdown and discount a lot of their video games along with their collectibles, mostly Marvel Legends, DC Universe, Star Wars Black Series, and other pop culture merchandise, but boy does it sell out fast.
That's why it's great to have Preternia, CheapAssGamer, and Wario64 followed on my social media accounts for I can know ASAP whenever these deals go live.
It should be noted that Best Buy sometimes carries NECA, Super7, and Limited Run Games' merchandise. They never carry a lot of any of that stock, so if you see it in-store or online on sale, there's no guarantee that it's going to stick around for long.
Their deals on Marvel Legends, Star Wars Black Series, and DC Multiverse figures have been pretty nuts lately. I bought that X-Men (Retro) Sentinel for $24.99 (plus fucking shipping) off Hasbro Pulse when it was first announced, thinking it was going to be impossible to find anywhere, only for Best Buy to list that thing for $3.99 last summer. I INSTANTLY bought like 3 more for army building on my display down the road. I had the same reaction when they listed the Batman: Arkham City DC Multiverse re-release figures on the cheap that INSTANTLY sold out, so I couldn't snag not a single one of those. It's so annoying too because Best Buy will make one of these sales live in the middle of the night and of course that shit will be sold out by the time that most of us on the East Coast wake up in the morning.
If you're still pre-ordering and buying your new video games from GameStop in 2023, then you're a goddamn fool in my eyes. GameStop are still the kings of ripping gamers off for their hard-earned money. The same can be said for the few pop culture and nerd culture collectibles that they have in stock.
To GameStop's credit, they did do a massive clearance sale of their collectibles throughout the holidays during the end of 2023, mostly on Marvel Legends, DC Multiverse, AEW Unrivaled Series, WWE Elites, Power Rangers Lightning Collection, GunPla, Funko Pops, and a lot of other merchandise that has been filling their shelves over the past few years. If you're lucky, you can even snag a few statues and gaming T-Shirts for a reasonable price too during those sales. I haven't had a Powered-Up membership in well over a decade with them so I can't tell you if that's worth your money or not as I honestly may walk into a GameStop ONCE every 2-4 months, just to see if they have any collectibles on sale. Their video game prices are just as laughable as you can easily find most of what they are carrying elsewhere for MUCH cheaper.
Don't even bother with their website as 9 times out of 10 their online inventory won't reflect what they have in-store anyway, whether it's collectibles or video games. I went to at least a dozen different GameStops trying to pick up Mega Man Zero/ZX Collection for PlayStation 4 during the holidays when it was clearanced out for $1.99 and not a single one had it in stock nor knew if they EVER carried it in their stores, yet their own website said otherwise. I will give GameStop props for adhering to the prices on their website whenever I would show them proof of something they weren't aware of. I never had a problem with them honoring those deals in-person.
Be wary of ordering online from them period as your stuff will show up in horrid condition, whether it's video games or collectibles. I had collectibles show up looking like someone stepped on the boxes and video games come in without any cases, yet weren't used. So yeah, you get what you pay for.
The deals don't stop here. I just happened to share and list every place I check around to regularly and keep tabs on in terms of hunting for deals for some of my favorite collectibles. Some might see this as me "exposing the business" of collecting in a sense, but you can obtain a decent collection figures and collectibles without taking out a bank loan for some of these very costly toys that go for several hundreds of dollars that you probably won't be able to resell for nearly as much that you paid for it in most cases. I share this information to my loyal readers for we can continue to thrive together as collectors. I don't have to hoard this stuff for myself as I'm not competing with anyone. I want to see everyone get all of the cool stuff that they want in their collections too. If we help each other out, then we all win at the end of the day.
