NXT Vengeance Day (2024) was a professional wrestling event produced by WWE. It was the fourth annual Vengeance Day event held for the promotion's developmental brand NXT, and the 12th Vengeance overall. The event aired via WWE's livestreaming platforms and took place on February 4, 2024, at the F&M Bank Arena in Clarksville, Tennessee, marking NXT's first livestreaming event to be held in Tennessee.
Six matches were contested at the event. In the main event, Ilja Dragunov defeated Trick Williams to retain the NXT Championship. In other prominent matches, Baron Corbin and Bron Breakker defeated Carmelo Hayes and Trick Williams to win the Men's Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic, which was the opening bout, and Lyra Valkyria defeated Roxanne Perez and Lola Vice to retain the NXT Women's Championship; this started as a singles match between Valkyria and Perez, however, midway through the match, Vice cashed in her Breakout Tournament contract, converting it into a triple threat match.
Going into this PLE, I didn't give a flying fuck about this year's Dusty Tag Team Classic AT ALL. WWE has a big problem with their tag team divisions across the scope of this entire company coming off as bland and boring to me. As for this match though? It was a pretty fun watch, much credited to Breakker's explosiveness and Melo bumping his ass off. Carmelo and Breakker are great opponents for each other and compliment the others' strengths and hides their weaknesses or areas that they are lacking in. This was definitely a match that made both of them shine. Naturally, Melo would do all of the work in this match since Trick would be wrestling later in the main event, but Trick got his spots in too after getting the hot tag. I have to give Baron Corbin his flowers too for this match, despite me shitting on almost everything he's been involved with on the main roster. Corbin's End of Days counter into the finisher execution always looks amazing when he's able to do it on guys much lighter than him and this tag team run of him and Breakker is definitely doing wonders for them both.
The finish didn't surprise anyone as the right team went over. Carmelo Hayes took the bullet for Trick Williams (who still oversold the impact and fell out of the ring regardless) when Breakker came charging in with a Spear and ate the pin. Melo's sacrifice convinced Trick that he wanted Melo to join him at ringside for the main event. As soon as Trick made that decision later in this show, that's when I KNEW Trick fucked up royally.
It was subtle in the past that Joe Gacy felt like the second coming of the late Bray Wyatt, or maybe Marty "The Moth" Martinez from Lucha Underground in terms of his gimmick, but now that they have dissolved his faction (Grizzled Young Veterans have departed the promotion for TNA Wrestling and Ava Raine is currently the new NXT General Manager), Gacy had to find his own place/direction going forward. Seems like they are going with a similar story that they pulled with Liv Morgan a few years ago where she would participate in these crazy hardcore matches and show this "maniacal edge" that she's infatuated with the pain that comes with it.
To their credit, out of the countless hardcore matches we see in modern wrestling on a regular basis, this was an entertaining one by WWE standards and one that had some pretty cool and unique spots. This was another match that I wasn't enamoured with going into this show, but by the end, I was digging it so mission accomplished on making me a believer and keeping me entertained from bell to bell. As an added bonus, I was happy to see that Dijak FINALLY win something after appearing on so many TakeOver special for as long as he's been in this company up to this point.
(Laughs) I swear, I'm not black enough to get this OTM gimmick with the former Reggie, now Scrypts, leading the team of Lucien Price, Bronco Nima, and Jaida Parker. I would bet the farm that they gave Jaida Parker that name just for some tongue-in-cheek reference to Miss Parker from the Friday movies and to pop Black Wrestling Twitter in some capacity. After she did that one spot in the corner (which wasn't even that impressive IMHO), I instantly hopped on Twitter to see Black Wrestling Twitter the next big thing, much like this ground swell of support for Lash Legend that seemed to have cropped up after she joined Meta Four.
For me this match wasn't it, especially with these two stereotypical gimmicks that are trying too hard for crowd reactions when there has to be something better that this company could be doing with these people. This was the epitome of a bathroom break match/intermission for the remainder of this show. Hell, they could have moved this match over to NXT this upcoming week and I doubt anyone would have batted an eye.
For those who weren't aware, this match was originally a singles match against Lyra and Roxanne. It started off simple enough with the narrative being that both Lyra and Roxanne were evenly matched for the duration of this match until Roxanne got the upper hand off one well-timed counter and went for the pin, only for Lola Vice to run out to use her Breakout Tournament contract as if it was a Money in the Bank cash-in to turn this match into a triple threat.
Watching this match live, I groaned at the sight of Lola Vice coming out here for two reasons: 1) Using the Breakout Tournament contract like a MITB cash-in comes off as lame attempt to make this match interesting. 2) Lola Vice isn't ready to be the NXT Women's Champion quite yet.
I'll say something else about this match that is concerning me over the past few months. I think NXT needs to stop "protecting" Roxanne Perez. If they aren't careful, fans are going to turn against her and end up resenting her like John Cena over time for pushing her so much. I'm concerned about this as they have money in her whenever as a babyface underdog in a women's division that is desperate for babyface stars in a sea of "cool" heels.
I think she would have been ready to get called up to the main roster ages ago until I noticed a few flaws in her game. For one, she calls out spots as loud as John Cena and Jon Moxley. Plus, this is more of a personal nit-pick but she's doing that annoying thing that a ton of amateur hour women in wrestling do where they start screaming "C'MON!" to dry to rally/amp up the crowd to next to no reaction. It comes off as so cringe and I hope someone at the Performance Center tells her that, but I doubt they will when I still notice some of the girls on the main roster doing that not just in WWE but in several promotions. That does nothing but draw more attention to how less over you as a talent is.
Lola Vice isn't bad but she's got the greatest option either in terms of who Lyra should be dropping that belt to. Plus, what is the rush when it is clear that Lola needs more polish. It would mean more when she has a lot more significant wins under her belt and has established herself a bit more. Elektra Lopez doing the honors for her on the way out wasn't much to write home about in terms of that win and her overall performance in the Women's Breakout Tournament was average at best.
Ultimately, Lola was brought into this match for one reason alone - just to protect Roxanne Perez from suffering a loss as she could get beat here without eating the pinfall/submission. With Cora Jade on the shelf for next few months and Tiffany Stratton called up to the main roster, I have to wonder who will be Roxanne's dancing partners in the meantime. I can't see them continue to drag out this path of her reclaiming the NXT Women's title that she never lost while Lyra and Tatum have this odd pairing going on.
I didn't pay attention to the Men's Breakout Tournament at all in the least last year outside of Lexis King's match or two and that's about it as I didn't care after he was eliminated. Apparently, I missed out on the rise of this beast of a man winning the whole thing. He didn't waste his time cashing in his contract to take the NXT North American Championship from Dragon Lee on one of their weekly TV tapings either, so this was the rematch.
To make a long story short, if you haven't seen Oba Femi work before then this is a stellar showcase of his work. He's fortunate to have someone as talented as Dragon Lee to bump his ass off and sell to make his offense look like a million bucks. This match definitely made me a believer of Oba Femi. I'm anxious to see more of this big man work. In a landscape of a lot of smaller guys (and girls) being pushed in modern wrestling, a big guy like this who can work and look great doing it really stands out.
The sky's the limit for Oba Femi. I hope they take their time grooming him up for the main roster. I was wondering who was going to be the next big star/heavy-hitter to watch following Bron Breakker's main roster call-up but here's my answer.
In hindsight, I saw people knocking on this match after the fact while the other end of the spectrum has said that this was the greatest main event in NXT TakeOver history. For me personally, I'm in the middle in terms of my verdict on this match.
Ilja is great; that goes without saying and Trick's corny ass is making me a believer the more and more I see him in this role. He's got the crowds eating out of his hands in terms of getting behind his rise as a babyface and it seemed like this crowd was all in on him beating Ilja here. I think that's the reason why people were either shitting on this match or praised it.
For me, it's not a bad thing that Trick didn't win the title here. I think they can pay off the betrayal from Carmelo (we'll get to that shortly) by winning the belt off of Melo after he somehow picks up the title off of Ilja going into Stand & Deliver for WrestleMania weekend. What I hope they don't do is make it a triple threat as Trick is ready for his moment as the NXT Champion. Do his crowning moment during WrestleMania weekend. Melo AND Ilja should be the next main roster call-ups following WrestleMania season. If not, then I don't know what they are doing. Melo has been ready AGES ago.
The tale of the tape for this match was continuing from Trick dropping the ball and Melo taking the bullet for him that cost them to lose the Dusty Tag Team Classic in tonight's opener. Trick's decision to have Melo join him at ringside tonight came back to haunt him as there was a major instance where Melo's presence almost cost him the match. One in particular comes to mind where Melo got Ilja's face, only for Ilja to retaliate causing Melo to inadvertently strike the ailing knee of Trick Williams. That ailing knee was a weak point that came into question for the remainder of the match and was ultimately that did Trick in.
After the match, Melo attacked Trick from behind and assaulted that same knee even further, much to the dismay of the crowd that were showering him with "FUCK YOU MELO" chants and boos. I could only laugh as I have been calling this shit for MONTHS now. Trick was a goddamn fool to believe anyone but Melo had anything to benefit from derailing him from the NXT Championship. As of this posting (2/10/2024), Melo has confessed that he was the culprit behind Trick's attack months ago, so it makes Trick Williams look even more foolish in hindsight. I'm all for heel Melo again as this babyface run wasn't for me in the least. I get that NXT didn't have a choice following his rise and popularity leading up to him dethroning Bron Breakker last year, but he's one of those guys that is a natural fit as a heel.
