Impello Bells

Youth & Children's Handbells

Impello Bells

Handbells are a percussive instrument. A 'clapper' strikes the metal casting of a bell to produce sound.

Impello - Etymology

From in- +‎ pellō (“push, drive”).

Verb

impellō (present infinitive impellere, perfect active impulī, supine impulsum); third conjugation

  1. I push, drive or strike against something; assail.

  2. I drive or push forward, set in motion, urge on, impel.

  3. (figuratively) I impel, incite, urge, instigate, stimulate, persuade.

  4. (figuratively) I overthrow, subdue, rout, destroy, vanquish.

We are looking to reopen our youth and children's handbell program. Below are three videos from the Choristers Camp in the summer of 2021. The Choristers recorded these pieces after one week of instruction.

The Impello Bells will be rehearsing each week on Wednesdays at 4:30pm for one hour. There is no cost to join this group, only your time commitment to rehearsing and performing.

We will have our first rehearsal on Wednesday September 22nd, 2021. If you are interested in the bells, you can use the contact info form at the bottom of this page. If you have further questions you can email Rob Cairns at met.handbells@gmail.com or use the space provided on the contact info form.

You will also find info on how we have adapted rehearsals for the pandemic below.

And maybe after a bit of practice . . .

Or possibly with a bit of singing . . .

How have we adapted for COVID-19?

We are taking our lead from the Thames Valley Board of Education and following the same protocols as students do at school. If the schools close we will do the same. The specific protocols we are following are:

  • Masks are required.

  • Hands are washed upon entry to rehearsal.

  • Sign in for contact tracing.

  • Number of members per rehearsal is limited in accordance with provincial mandates..

  • Tables and playing positions are physically distanced.

  • Handbell gloves are worn for rehearsals, limiting direct contact with the instruments.

  • Bells/Chimes are sanitized after use.
