Bona-Urbe, Terra-Pacifica. In keeping with the much-debated Constitutional reforms that entered into force March 1st, today marks the beginning of week-long referenda across the Unincorporated Territories regarding their status within (or outside) the Grand Socialist Federation.
Four different regional referenda will be held independently, organized by the respective provisional governments and the citizenry of each territory. The Northern Territories, consisting of much of the former Estinian Southwest, have been split into two administrative regions that will each decide whether to become fully independent nations, integrate with the Federation as full-fledged wilayat (province), or pursue a freely-associated status (much like Terra-Pacifica). Additionally, the western part of the Northern Territories (historically comprised of the lands between the Colorado River and the area that the Cartagenans called “New Meshik”) has contemplated joining the Yavapai Confederacy; however, such a decision would be left for a second referendum if independence results from the first.
Since opting not to leave the Federation last year, Terra-Pacificans will again be given the choice of full integration as a province, or to maintain the current status quo. Under the reforms, Terra-Pacificans would be allowed to participate in the 2019 Neo-Meshikan presidential elections even if they choose to retain their status as a Protectorate.
Lastly, the former Estinian peninsula of Floreada (provisionally administered by the Terra-Pacifican governorship), notable for its population mainly of Lusogenan descent, will also have the options of pursuing independence, becoming an integral part of Terra-Pacifica, or attaining full provincehood. In the latter case, the southern coastal city of Syracuse would be designated provincial capital.
The referendum is set to run from 8:00 h today, to 20:00 h on Monday evening. Results are expected by Wednesday of next week.
