NOTEWORTHY ITEMS

Our entire collection includes items which form part of a set in that they have a common theme – usually the items are related to one person or to a location of significance. By their nature, such groups tend to be of special interest. A brief summary of some of those themed items is listed below. A fuller explanation of each group can be found in dedicated webpages which can be found from the drop-down menu above, or by using the link provided at the end of each summary below.

The Conway Cross

Perhaps our most significant item concerns Pte Harry Conway, a local soldier in WW1. The main piece among items related to Harry is the temporary wooden cross which marked his grave in Northern France after he died of wounds received in early 1918. The details of his story are recorded on a separate page which can be viewed by clicking here.

The Nicholson Photo Albums

Another local soldier, Pte. Des Nicholson, served in WW2 and he produced two photo albums which recorded places and activities during his travels through India and the Middle East. His story and a large sample of interesting photos can be viewed here.

Hellfire Pass

We have a collection of items related to the infamous Hellfire Pass in Thailand which was part of the notorious Burma railway which Prisoners of War were forced to complete during WW2 after their capture in Singapore in 1942. In 1989 a memorial was erected there to commemorate the lives of the many soldiers who died there. Details of items related to that location and its significance can be found here.
