Visit Aurora, the Live Transport Tracker in Melbourne
The X'Trapolis 100 is a Single-Deck EMU (Electrical Multiple Unit). It's part of Alstom's X'Trapolis Line of trains.
They were originally ordered in 2000 by then network owner, Connex to replace the ageing Hitachi fleet.
Affectionately called "x'Traps", the X'Trapolis trains first entered service in between 2002 and 2004. The body shells of the trains were built in France, but were assembled in Ballarat, Victoria.
Eight separate orders have been lodged for X'Trapolis trains, in order to have modern trains servicing the network. The model was remodelled in 2009, and newer X'Trapolis trains since then are slightly different.
These trains have buttons which can be pressed to open the doors when they are green. The trains are 3 cars but are usually coupled together to have 6 car trains running on most lines. They have a total of 264 seats, with over quadruple that capacity for standing. It is approximately 138 metres in length. It's maximum speed is around 130-140 km/h, but never goes up to that speed. The car body is made from steel.
