Visit Aurora, the Live Transport Tracker in Melbourne
The Myki card is a contactless smart card system that powers most of Victoria's public transport system.
You can use Myki to get to nearly anywhere in Melbourne and a fair chunk of Victoria.
Paper tickets are quite uncommon nowadays as Myki has become mainstream. You can still find them on certain V/Line services and interstate services such as The Overland or the XPT.
Before Myki, Melbourne's trains ran using the metcard system.
Metcard was a paper ticket containing a magenetic strip which was verified by the Metcard gates.
Predating Metcard, Stamp Cards were the original train tickets used on our public transport system, these were verified by the transit staff at each station prior to entering the station platform.
The short term Myki was unfortunately short lived.
Essentially a contactless metcard, these paper tickets were used frequently by occasional travellers and tourists who didn't have a Myki.
